PARTY DETAILS as told by Laila

When Laura initially contacted me for a Hot Air Balloon Festival party I was thrilled! I always had wanted to do a festival and her theme I was simply smitten with!

We started looking for locations and Thalatta Estate seemed to be the most appropriate one! We booked the venue and had our initial meeting at a bench there. Laura came to me with a fully organized presentation of items she liked and wanted to see at the party. She wanted a matted color palette of corals and mints, but I wanted to go colorful and fun. I convinced her to change her palette and the planning began.

Milla is soon going to be a big sister, so Laura and Aleksandar wanted Lucca to have a special section at the party as well. We started with the invitations. It took us a couple of tries to get the concept right and the 3D hot air balloon inside the box was born. We picked bright glittery patterned paper for the panels and the color scheme was set.

I enlisted the help of the super talented Johanna from Bambini Soiree to build all the decor for the place. I knew I wanted a giant hot air balloon, super oversized colorful letters with Milla’s name and a kids area. The biggest challenge was doing a double sided dessert station that would be covered somehow from Miami’s blazing hot sun! She outdid herself and all my expectations and could not be more thankful for every single piece she brought to life for this celebration!

Donut Divas took care of our food and did a phenomenal job with the gorgeous stations. All the sweets for the table were simply stunning, each and every baker that brought something in is beyond talented and I am grateful to have found them and work with them.

I am so proud of the way this celebration came together. There’s so many incredible details that it is super hard to just pick one. Happy 1st Birthday Milla!

Rolled “Rose” Tortilla Chips {Kentucky Derby® Inspired}

Run for the Roses Chips & Salsa

Sonny and I were brainstorming creative food ideas for our our Kentucky Derby® inspired party theme for 14 Hands Winery, and the famous “Run for the Roses” nickname of the Derby kept coming up. We started racking our brains on what kind of food we could make to look like roses (aside from the ever-popular rose radish garnish), and somehow rose tortilla chips came up! It suddenly seemed like a tortilla could be treated in a similar way that I often use a large paper circle to make paper roses, and thus the experiment began…

It definitely took some trial and error, but ended up working out in the end! I’m going to be totally honest though – even though the steps to make these aren’t difficult, per say, they do take time to make and it requires a lot of them to make a serving platter look “full”. This definitely isn’t a dish for when you’re in a big rush! It IS something fun to try when you want to stretch your creative muscles and really surprise your guests with something clever, though. I mean, what’s not to love about “Run for the ROSE CHIPS and Salsa” at a Kentucky Derby party, right? ;) I’m thinking with a little creativity this concept could work in nicely to other themes too.

Here’s how to make them: (more…)

Kentucky Derby Party DIY: Race Horse Mason Jars

Kentucky Derby Centerpiece - Painted Mason Jars

Hello from LOUISVILLE! It’s so fun to be amidst all the excitement surrounding the Kentucky Derby® already… I arrived here last night to work on some pre-event media with 14 Hands Wine, (proud sponsor of the Kentucky Derby® for the 3rd year in a row), and can already say that there really IS something to be said about “southern charm & hospitality”. In fact, I’m pretty sure our waitress at breakfast this morning was the very definition of both, which was especially appreciated after our 3:30am wake up call! ;)

Anyways, speaking of charming things, I have a DIY project to share with you today that I hope you’ll find charming too. It’s the Race Horse Mason Jar Centerpiece from my recent Derby Style Inspired Party for 14 Hands. This project is super flexible, so you can easily scale it to best fit your needs… just make 1 jar, make 3 jars, or really Run for the Roses and make 10 of ’em to display all the way down your table like I did here:

Kentucky Derby Party DIY: Preppy Neck Tie Garland

DIY Tutorial - Men's Neck Tie Party Garland

Since Kentucky Derby® fashion (for both guys & gals!) was the key inspirational element for my recent Derby Style Party for 14 Hands Wine, I thought it would be fun to create some themed party garlands that looked like preppy neck ties! And as much as I would’ve loved to be able to string a zillion real neck ties in the perfect color palette across the room, I wanted/needed to keep these garlands affordable…

Paper is always an affordable route, but fabric felt most appropriate here, so these (cute & easy-to-make!) DIY Neck Tie Garlands ended up incorporating a bit of both. Read on to learn how to make them + download the printable tie template!

P.S. To give this garland a little more obvious “Derby flair” , I also added little Gold Derby Silhouette Decals to the finished ties. These are essentially silhouette style horse themed stickers that I spray painted gold. Check out the tutorial here. Both of these projects are super versatile too – just change up the style of fabric or stickers accents to make your tie garland work for your theme!

PARTY DETAILS as told by Ashley…

In the South, even second babies get to be celebrated!! We loved designing this Pink & Gold Sprinkle to celebrate baby Emerson’s impending arrival.

For the centerpieces, what better way to decorate than with precious dresses that Emerson could wear as she grows. Of course, just dresses on regular hangers would never do so we had to add some gold sequins to the hangers!!

The main spread had a vintage pram filled with baby’s breath and paper umbrellas & crystals dangling from above. It was such a fun event to plan!!

Modern & Magical Cinderella Party {Movie Inspired!}

cinderella birthday party

I had the pleasure of meeting Jessebell of Dreamland Parties & Events earlier this year at BASH 2015, but I had know idea she had THIS on the other end of her magic wand! ;)

Her Modern & Magical Cinderella Party was inspired by the recent live action Disney movie (which is super cute btw!). Before it was even released in theaters, she collected inspiration from the movie’s promotional poster, rounded up some marvelous vendors, and turned into the fairy godmother of Cinderella parties! See all of the blue, gold, and glitter covered details that are fit for a princess (or two!) below.

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:

  • Ruffled, quilted, & butterfly cake by Kima’s Konfections + “Once Upon A Time” gold topper by Paper + Pop
  • Gold carriage inspired dessert table + “Happily Ever After” decorative books
  • Candy apples embellished with blue satin ribbon bows
  • Custom birthday girl Cinderella letters + antique clock striking midnight!
  • Princess crown cupcake toppers, blue glittered bottles, and paper butterfly chairback details

Kentucky Derby® Party DIY: Gold Horse Decals

Kentucky Derby Craft - Gold Horse Decals

This is my very favorite kind of DIY project – SO easy and SO effective! I used it to theme up lots of decor elements for my recent Derby Style Inspired Party, created in celebration of the new Kentucky Derby® Red Blend by 14 Hands Wine.

HOW TO MAKE THEM:
All you need for this project is gold spray paint and a sheet of horse themed stickers. Just make sure that the stickers have a nice die-cut silhouette shape to them – like the set shown here, which I found in the scrapbook aisle at Michaels.

Once you’ve got your materials, prep a spray painting surface outside. Since sticker sheets are small, you can just use a large piece of scrap cardboard like I did here, or lay down a small tarp or large plastic trash bag. Spray one light coat of gold paint first and let it dry for a few minutes. This coat kind of acts like a “primer” and doesn’t need to be pretty. Then, spray a 2nd coat so that you end up with a nice, even coverage. Done!

Let the stickers dry for a few minutes, and you’re ready to use them! Easy, right? I stuck them on wood crates to make themed stands and risers for the party… (more…)

Kentucky Derby® Party DIY: Wine Glass “Fascinators”

Kentucky Derby Party DIY - Wine Glass Fascinators

It’s THAT time of year again already! And I’m excited to kick off a series of Kentucky Derby® DIY Tutorials today with this fun little project that’s actually a follow up to one of last year’s ideas too… (the Southern Belle Stemware, where we used felt and feathers to turn wine glass bases into ladies hats).

Since the theme of my newest collaboration with 14 Hands Wine is “Derby Style”, it made sense to draw inspiration from Derby fashion again, but I also wanted to come up with something new… so the result is these chic little Wine Glass “Fascinators” for the ladies (+ super easy printable paper ties for the guys!).

This is definitely a “wow factor for your party” project that isn’t hard, BUT the elements are small, so it does require a bit of patience. It’s also very versatile; as long as you have the key materials on hand – in whatever styles/colors match your party – you can switch up the details as much as you like, and have fun channeling your inner fashion designer!

HOW TO MAKE THEM:

You’ll Need:

– Felted Wool Balls for the base of the “fascinator” (I used the 20mm size)
– Small artificial flowers
– Decorative netting and/or tulle
– Feathers
– Tools: hot glue gun, scissors, 3D glue dots (not pictured above)
