Joint Royal Princess High Tea Garden Birthday Party

royal princess garden birthday party

Having kids with birthdays close together can be a tricky situation to navigate. This year, her girls requested a Royal Princess High Tea Garden Party, full of blushing bouquets, gorgeous watercolor stationery & tea party sweets fit for a Queen. One of my favorite details are the Disney Princess quotes at every place setting, which give the table a young, sweet feel while keeping with the overall elegant theme.

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:

  • Floral decorated crystal chandeliers hanging from trees + tables under a white canopy tent with ivy
  • Tea sandwiches, mini raspberry tarts & chocolate eclairs + chocolate dipped Rice Krispie hearts
  • Stunning gold leaf & floral painted cake + simpler individual cakes for each birthday girl
  • Hand painted flower & tea cup cookies, pink rock candy & gorgeous flower crowns

DIY Tutorial: Color Block Balloon-Dipped Glasses

Balloon Dipped Glasses Tutorial

I’m excited to share one of my favorite new “party tricks” with you today!

This fun and quick little decor idea stemmed from a combo of my obsession with color blocked/paint-dipped things + my extreme impatience at waiting for paint to dry (or waiting for anything, for that matter… I’m definitely an “instant gratification” sort of person!).

Anyways, a few months ago I was working on this Geometric Drink Station and felt like the glass tumblers needed a big splash of color. We’ve color-blocked $1 glasses from Ikea before using spray paint (for this party), and – while they looked cool in the end – they were still a big pain to create between taping them off, painting, waiting for the paint to dry, doing a 2nd coat, fixing touch-ups, etc. And then of course there’s the fact that I essentially turned those tumblers into a “one time use” item. This new method provides a solution to ALL of those issues!

Summer Fun! A Fresh & Fruity Milkshakes Bar

good vibes printable flag

This is the time of year when I find myself wanting to soak up every last drop of summer… Does anyone else think the season is flying by way too fast?! It feels like a good time to take a deep breath and just chill out for a bit before the fall/holiday madness begins. (And that includes pretending that I don’t really see those Halloween items being stocked on the store shelves already too!)

Two things that really scream “summer!” to me are ice cream and fresh fruit. So, I thought it would be fun to pair them together as the inspiration for this project – which is the last of 3 milkshake bars that I recently created for California Milk Advisory Board. The first 2 milkshake bars had plenty of the more traditional ice cream toppings like hot fudge, caramel sauce, sprinkles, etc.. If you’re feeling in a chocolate-y (or boozy!) mood you can check those out here (Cocktail Milkshakes) and here (Nautical Shakes & Sundaes).

This “Fresh & Fruity” Milkshakes Bar still features delicious ice cream made from Real California Milk, but the ingredients have taken a healthy twist… focusing on fresh fruit and lower fat or all-natural additions like agave nectar, low-fat granola, crushed pistachios, and Chia seeds.

Let’s start with a closer look at the fruity milkshakes on the menu:

fruity milkshakes bar

The Watermelon Chill
Remember how I mentioned the need to chill out earlier? Well, here’s a great way to do it! (Preferably while lounging poolside on a sunny afternoon.)

This milkshake features: vanilla ice cream made from Real California Milk, fresh watermelon, a splash of milk, and a bit of agave nectar. The amount of agave nectar necessary will vary based on the sweetness of your watermelon, so just add it to taste. The chia seeds can be mixed in or used as a garnish. I love how they give a little nod to the look of “watermelon seeds” when used as a garnish!

watermelon chill milkshake

The Tropical Dream
Pineapple, bananas, milk, cinnamon, AND vanilla ice cream made from Real California Milk… what’s not to love?! I chose to go heavier on the pineapple than the bananas here myself (about a 2-1 ratio), and really loved the result, but you can adjust the flavor ratio to your liking. Garnish with extra cinnamon and pineapple for a pretty presentation. (more…)

Lemon-Almond Pound Cake with “Almond Flower” Glaze

Lemon Almond Pound Cake Recipe

My personal approach to baking has always been simplicity + attention to presentation. I’m not a gourmet cook (at this point in life at least!) and have recently learned to stop apologizing for that… there are only so many things you can devote a big span of your attention to at once. ;)

However, I DO love to dream up and make tasty things that are fuss-free and pretty, which is the perfect description of this Lemon-Almond Pound Cake, created as part of my Baker’s Dozen collaboration with Krusteaz.

Here’s what you need to make it:

Krusteaz Meyer Lemon Pound Cake

In a nutshell, I added a bit of almond extract to the (already yummy) Krusteaz Meyer Lemon Pound Cake Mix, then baked and glazed the pound cake as directed on the box. The mix for the glaze is also included in the box, and I added a bit of almond extract to that as well.

While the glaze was still wet, I decorated the cake with little “almond flowers” all over the top, using white chocolate chips as the centers and sliced almonds as the petals. Here’s how it turned out: (more…)

Set Sail for Shakes & Sundaes! A Nautical-Inspired Ice Cream Station

Nautical Ice Cream Sundae Bar Ideas

This post is sponsored by California Milk Advisory Board.

Did you know that there’s such a thing as National Hot Fudge Sundae Day? Seriously – you can google it! And also… it’s TOMORROW. Personally, I think any day is a great day for a hot fudge sundae, but if someone wants to give me a good excuse to enjoy one, then that’s just fine by me. ;)

So, in celebration of National Hot Fudge Sundae Day – and of July being National Ice Cream Month in general – California Milk Advisory Board asked me to create a family-friendly Milkshakes & Sundaes Bar, featuring delicious ice cream made from Real California Milk. I always love a good party theme, and thought a nautical twist felt especially fitting for summer, so I invite you to scroll on down and Set Sail for Shakes and Sundaes with me today!

I hope this post inspires you to set up an ice cream bar of your own, which can mean anything from styling out a full table to utilizing just a couple of your favorite quick ideas for a simpler get together. Either way, I’m giving away all of these Nautical Ice Cream Printables for free, which should make recreating this look even easier. Download the signs, labels, banner, and other paper details right here.

Ice Cream in acrylic tubs

HOW TO SET UP A NAUTICAL ICE CREAM BAR

The first thing you’ll need to do is map out the basics:

1) flavors of ice cream made from Real California Milk
2) mix-ins and toppings
3) serving vessels

For a shakes and sundaes bar, I’ve found that it’s best to keep the ice cream options simple. Serve just 2-3 flavors so that you have plenty of room for toppings & mixers. In addition to cups and sundae bowls, it’s always nice to include ice cream cones for the people that love them… like me! ;)

ice cream sundae bar ideas

I found the plastic bowls pictured above at Target for .79 each. They’re technically kids bowls, but perfectly sized for ice cream sundaes! Wooden spoons were customized with patterned paper on the handles (except for the one design I had that already matched). Bottled toppings like flavored syrups and hot fudge got a quick makeover too, with ribbon + printable papers & labels.

This station is equipped with everything you needs to make milkshakes, floats, ice cream sundaes, and even an Ice Cream Sundae Milkshake (!) like this one: (more…)

Retro Fun for Grown Ups: A Cocktail Milkshake Bar!

Retro Cocktail Milkshakes Bar

As the saying goes – I scream, you scream, we ALL scream for ice cream”  – and that includes the grown-ups!

And being one of these ice-cream-loving-grown-ups myself, I was super excited when California Milk Advisory Board asked me to design a Cocktail Infused Milkshake Bar for them, in celebration of National Ice Cream Month (July). That’s right, folks… this table is filled with everything you need to make those tasty milkshakes that we all know and love, but served up with an adult-friendly kick!

How to Set Up a Cocktail Milkshake Bar

I started by dividing the table into 3 clear-cut sections: SCOOP (the ice cream made from Real California Milk), SPIKE (the mixers), and SHAKE (the blender). Giant ice cream cone balloons served as fun signs!
