Planning a Summer Dinner Party {Treasure Hunting}

Pier 1 Summer Dinner Party

As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, I’ll be hosting a little backyard dinner party this summer in collaboration with Pier 1 (yay!) and documenting it here on the blog. How cool it is that this project comes with a built-in excuse to hang out with friends?! ;) I also want to use this opportunity to really get playful with the decor and try some brand new things in the food & drink department. You know… have a little fun with it!

Treasure Hunting (Decisions, Decisions)

Whenever there’s lots of creative freedom on a project, I usually feel myself morphing into Miss Indecisive at some point, and that definitely applies here. It’s often a good sign as far as the big picture goes – indicative of not being able to decide which direction/idea/thing to commit to amidst all the great options – but at some point you just have to pick a path already and move forward. The good news: that officially happened yesterday on my 4th and final “treasure hunting” trip; I’m going with a colorful, bohemian-inspired look that incorporates some unexpected elements and exudes good vibes only – which should always be a goal, right? :)

Wandering around the store dreaming up possibilities for different products was actually very fun (except for the one time when my energetic 4 year old tagged along and I basically just panicked about the potential consequences of my little “bull in a china shop” the entire time.) Since I didn’t make decisions right off the bat, I used my phone to snap pics of favorite items in the store that I could revisit/ponder at home. Some of what’s pictured in this post will be at the party, but there are other surprises too…. I don’t want to give everything away before the recap! Here’s one element that definitely did make the cut, though:

Yoga Frog Bird Feeder

Remember the Yoga Frog Birdfeeder from post #1 that I was considering buying and then dressing up for the party? Well… I bought him! So this idea is also officially on its way to happening now, assuming he survives my kids long enough to actually make it to the dinner party in tact. For some reason they assume he’s their new giant toy. I did make sure he at least had a very safe ride home from the store, though and only counted a couple of strange looks on the way home. ;)

Here’s another item I was instantly drawn to every time I set foot in the store: (more…)

DIY Tutorial: Candy Baby Rattles {Baby Shower Decor}

DIY candy baby shower baby rattles tutorial from hwtm

I’m excited to (finally!) share a fun little tutorial with you from the candy themed baby shower that I styled for Operation Shower back in March.

These were kind of a happy surprise. I was browsing Amazon for some decor elements for the party and stumbled on some translucent ball pit balls that looked just like giant pieces of hard candy… yay! So I instantly ordered them. Can you blame me? Amazon makes things way. too. easy. with that whole “One Click” thing. Next up: figuring out what to actually DO with them. (Yes, I do realize that’s the reverse order of how it normally goes, but it all worked out in the end!)

Anyways, I’d already used some photos of candy balls to create candy baby rattle graphics for the paper party collection, and decided that we obviously needed some 3D versions as well. ;)  The plastic balls were the perfect starting point… just throw in some real candy embellishments and hot glue, and voila: we’ve got ourselves some fun & colorful DIY Candy Baby Rattles!

They’re simple to make, and pretty dang cute! Gotta love that combo, right? Scroll down to check out the {sweet} tutorial below. (more…)

Sparkly Pink & Gold 3rd Birthday Party

gold glitter and pink 3rd birthday party dessert table

Pink and gold is one of our favorite color pairings here at HWTM. Add some sparkle, and you’ve hit the party palette trifecta! And that’s exactly what Amy Grout of SmashCake & Co. did when she styled up this beautiful Sparkly Pink & Gold Birthday Party for her darling daughter, Evie. With touches of ruffled frosting, edible glitter, and metallic gold dragees, each each dessert table treat seems to be more precious than the next… and almost too pretty to eat! Having adorable glittered heart milk bottles on hand to wash down the treats probably made the decision a little easier, though. ;)

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:

– Matte & metallic tissue tassel garland on the dessert table + matching garlands on the balloons & chairs
– Gold glitter cookie stacks with pink flower toppers + gold glitter striped macarons
– Darling ruffled fondant sugar cookies reminiscent of the birthday girl’s ruffled tutu skirt!

Trend Alert: “Ever After High” Party Theme

Ever-After-High-Party
Tonya Coleman here from Soireé Event Design, and I’m back with the “Trend Alert” where I share with you some of the hottest trends in party planning! Today’s guest post is all about the hot new trend — Ever After High!

Ever wonder what the kids of our favorite fairytale characters would be like? Well, wonder no more! Ever After High is the hot new animated series who follow the lives of the kids of some of fairytale’s famous characters like Raven Queen, daughter of the Evil Queen in Snow White; Briar Beauty, daughter of Sleeping Beauty; Apple White, daughter of Snow White; and my favorite of them all–Madeline Hatter, daughter of the Mad Hatter!

My daughters LOVE this new series and the dolls are a must have in our house! I think the concept is rather genius and as a fan of fairytales found myself enjoying watching the episodes with them and hanging out on their interactive website with lots of activities and cool stuff for tweens! I’m sure there will be many Ever After High parties coming this year and to give you some inspiration, here is an Ever After High dessert table I styled to get you started inspired by my favorite character–Madeline Hatter and her BFF the Raven Queen.
