Magical Rainbow Unicorn Birthday Party

rainbow unicorn birthday party

When I was little, rainbows and unicorns were a couple of my favorite things, especially with the huge popularity of Lisa Frank (remember that?!). And I’m guessing she’s not alone in that. ;) One of the party activities, “Paint by Party” cookies, looks SO fun, and the really great news is that Jessica is also sharing a step-by-step tutorial on those with us today! DIY Tutorial: “Paint by Party” Cookies {Rainbow Party}

paint by party rainbow cookies

As promised in our Rainbow Unicorn Party post, here are the step by step instructions to create your own “Paint by Party” cookies! As Jessica suggests, these could take on any form — they would be super cute as baby carriages or colorful POPsicles for a baby shower, jungle animals or Princess wands for a kid’s birthday party, or even holiday themed cookies like Christmas trees or Easter eggs! Let your creativity run wild! See all the details on how to

by Jessica Kirkland

“Paint-by-Party” Cookies are my new favorite customized party favor that doubles as a party activity too. I loved using them for the Rainbow Unicorn Party I hosted for my daughter’s 5th birthday.

These “Paint-by-Party Cookies” by Flourish Sweet Shop (FSS) were designed for party guests to paint using a customized paint palette of colors comprised of edible food colorings. Flourish Sweet Shop’s original “Paint-by-Party” cookies feature one cookie with an image to paint as well as the paint palette embedded in the overall design.

For the Rainbow Unicorn Party, I worked with Lisa to create two different cookies; one cookie to be painted and a separate cookie acting as the paint palette. I drew the rainbow cloud design and emailed it to FSS who then created the black line art image for the cookie design. FSS then created a heart-shaped paint palette containing the coordinating edible paint colors.

“Sweet Surprises” Candy Baby Shower {Recap Part 1 – General Event Overview}

Candy Baby Shower Centerpiece by Hostess with the Mostess

Hi, Everyone! I’m really excited to share some details with you today on one of the larger projects I worked on earlier this year: a “Sweet Surprises” Candy Baby Shower for Operation Shower! This event was held on March 4th, 2014 at Universal Studios Hollywood and made possible by Babies R Us, the Operation Shower team, and lots of generous vendors and volunteers that donated their time and resources. From the months of planning before to the actual day of the event, it truly took a village!

My role was theme concepting, graphic design, printing, and styling/centerpiece design for the tables… speaking of which – there were 33 of them! Yep, with 125 expectant military moms and nearly 300 guests total, this was by far the largest event Operation Shower has held yet, and there are a few other extra cool things to note about it too:

1) The Hostess

The event hostess was fashion designer/model/mom Heidi Klum (!), who was incredibly gracious about greeting and interacting with every guest of honor…. she visited the tables to chat, posed for pictures, and even held some of the babies and signed a pregnant belly. ;) Each guest of honor also received TONS of cool stuff – including a crib and a stroller! – from Heidi’s Truly Scrumptious baby and kids line.

Operation Shower Hostess Heidi Klum

I also can’t resist posting this next pic… simply because it’s not exactly often that I have a picture of Heidi Klum speaking behind a poster I designed… and I’ll admit that it kinda makes me happy. ;)

Heidi Klum speaking at Operation Shower's Sweet Surprises Event

2) The Location

The shower was held in The Globe Theater at Universal Studios, so even stepping outside the venue was pretty neat, with all the movie-set like decor and music nearby! I especially loved seeing those little Minions around. :)

Operation Shower Universal Studios

3) The Team

There were tons of people from all over that helped pull the event together, and it truly felt like Santa’s Workshop on set-up day… except in March and with “elves” that were making centerpieces and chair backs instead of toys.

Thank you to everyone (including Dayna and Jacque) that patiently embellished wire baby carriages with jelly beans, strung a zillion gum balls on bakers twine for chair backs, sustained “hot glued teddy bear” burns, and so on, to bring my crazy candy-embellished centerpiece visions to life! ;) Thanks also to my husband Sonny for going to literally every Michaels and Target in San Diego county for me to find enough of all the stuff that we needed!

special thanks

While we’re on the subject of Thank You’s, there are a few very important vendors that I want to recognize too… As I mentioned earlier, there were lots of vendors that donated products to help make this event extra special, but these are the 4 that I reached out to and worked with personally. I’d like to sincerely thank them again from the bottom of my heart:

1) Wildflower Linen

Wildflower Linen generously provided amazing matte satin table linens in 4 candylicious colors for all 33 lunch tables, the side tables, and the sweets station. The linens instantly brought the room – and our entire candy theme – to life. It would definitely not have looked the same without them!

Candy Baby Shower - Table Linens by Wildflower Linen

2) Empty Vase

The gorgeous floral arrangements displayed on 8 of the tables were designed and provided by talented LA-based florist, Empty Vase. I love the vibrant mix of colors and striped medallion vases they used to create delicious, rainbow-esque centerpieces that matched the candy theme perfectly!

Rainbow Candy Flower Arrangements by The Empty Vase

3) Candy Galaxy

“Candy” was our theme, and of course with a baby shower this large we were going to need a LOT of it! Thank you to Candy Galaxy for providing all of the candy used throughout the table decor (centerpieces, chair backs, etc) – as well as tons of jelly bellies for the candy ring making activity.

Since I used gummy bears as a key element in the paper details, I was especially excited to see their amazing assortment of gummy bear colors and ordered those in 6 different colors! Couldn’t resist the adorable giant gummy bear either! :)

Printable Shabby Chic Easter Bunny Tags & Garland

Free Easter Printables from HWTM - Shabby Chic Bunny Silhouettes

Well… somehow the year is flying by, spring will have sprung by this weekend, and we’re already on month #3 of the Free Printable Blog Hop! Our theme for this month is Easter, and since I’m just wrapping up a brand new Shabby Chic Easter party collection and my brain is totally in that mode, I thought it would be fun to make this month’s free printables match!

There are lots of fun uses for these little Shabby Chic Bunny Silhouettes… my original intention was to create a decorative paper garland (as shown in image #3, below) – but I also discovered that they look pretty dang cute as gift bottle tags (champagne brunch, anyone?) or party favor bag accents… especially when decked out with a cute little craft pom “cotton tails”!

Download the bunnies here, and make sure to scroll down for links to lots more FREE Easter Printables from all the lovely ladies participating in the Blog Hop. Enjoy! :)

Free Easter Printables from HWTM - Bunny Treat Bags

For the Paper Bunny Garland {pictured below}, I used a 1″ flower shaped craft punch + mini yellow poms to make small flower dividers for in between the bunnies… it felt like they needed a cute little accent. If you don’t have a flower punch, little paper or ribbon flags would do the trick too! (more…)
