Bright & Colorful Painting Birthday Party

art party crafting table for kids

Art inspired parties aren’t just for the girls, and this Bright & Colorful Painting Birthday Party that Tabitha Blue of Fresh Mommy Blog created for her adorable son is the perfect example! Plus, what little boy could resist getting messy with paint and then chowing down on the yummy cupcakes that they decorated… which of course translates to “piled on as much frosting and sprinkles as possible”. ;) In addition to being beautifully styled, this bright & happy celebration looks like a blast all around!

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:

– Colorful paper lantern garlands + cool rainbow apron garland backdrop for the dessert table
– Bright chocolate dipped pretzel rode & rice krispie treat ‘paint brushes’ + primary color layered cake
– Paintbrush themed printables + a tablescape stocked with all of the necessary painting supplies

Planning a Summer Dinner Party {Step 1: Get Inspired!}

Rustic Melamine Dinnerware

When it comes to parties, we feature a lot of “after” photos here at HWTM, but not a ton of “before” or “right smack in the middle of it” shots. And truth be told, posting more behind-the-scenes shots is something I’ve always wanted to do, but in reality I’m always so busy running from one thing to the next, just trying to get to the things that absolutely must. get. done. (i.e. client deadlines, keeping the kids alive & well, etc.), that the just-for-fun stuff I want to post hardly ever seems to happen.

That’s why I’m extra excited about this new Summer Dinner Party mini blog series project with Pier 1 and Spotify though. I’m required to share a little about the inspiration and planning process of a dinner party I’ll be hosting soon – before it’s actually hosted – so suddenly the behind the scenes stuff has become one of those things that must. get. done. Yay! ;) So off we go…

Brainstorming & Getting Inspired

Whenever I’m planning a party of any kind, inspiration & brainstorming are the first pieces of the puzzle, and I usually turn to hand sketches, digital mockups of ideas, and inspiration boards during this phase, as shown here.

The overarching guideline for this particular project is that it needs to feature elements from Pier 1’s Outdoor department. As strange as it sounds, a project can almost be more overwhelming when the guideline is so broad… it’s a great thing to have creative freedom, but this can also make it harder to focus or to even figure out where to start sometimes. So the solution was to browse my local Pier 1 and do pretty much exactly what they recommend: “find what speaks to you”. And that’s really what inspiration is about anyways, right?

The surprising thing is sometimes what catches your eye. I’m not particularly into yoga or frogs myself, yet I still found myself instantly drawn to a Yoga Frog Birdfeeder and thinking that it would be absolutely magical with a wire garland of mini tissue tassels! Here’s my digital mockup:

Yoga Frog Birdfeeder with Party Garland

Of course he will also need a framed “Keep Calm and Party On” sign sitting next to him for the finishing touch. I hope this idea works out in real life… stay tuned!

{Outdoor-Friendly} Dinnerware

I also fell in love with the new Carmelo Melamine Dinnerware (see image #1, at top), which seriously looks like glazed Italian stoneware… it’s quite possibly the most wonderfully deceiving melamine ever. And just like that, the star of the dinner table was discovered. For a little bohemian flair, I chose these festive Global Print Napkins to pair with the dinnerware. (more…)

Confetti Birthday Celebration {Sparkle & Shine!}

blue frosted naked birthday cake

Big celebrations don’t always have to happen at expected times. Sure, we see lots of incredible milestone birthday parties attached to familiar numbers like 21, 30, 40, etc – but what if your reasons for wanting to throw that extra fabulous, confetti-and-champagne-filled celebration just happen to fall at another time? Well, if you’re Miriam Corona, you simply make the timing work for you, instead of the other way around!

Miriam was pregnant when she turned 30 and didn’t really celebrate the milestone at that time. Cut to 2 years later – and she’s got an adorable 1 year old (who had possibly the coolest Monsters University First Birthday Party ever), a flourishing event planning business, a brand new workspace, and – OH, YA – another birthday to celebrate! It was high time to bust out the confetti, so to speak. ;)

I just love all the fun and sparkle that Miriam incorporated into her Confetti Birthday Celebration, and of course how she used our HWTM Confetti Birthday Collection to help bring it to life!

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:

– 4-tier, naked layered birthday cake with insanely awesome “happy birthday” script topper
– Gorgeous chocolate & confetti candy apples with satin bows and stripey straw “sticks”
– “Sparkle & Shine” confetti wands + confetti-covered invitations & party decor
– Bold black and white stripes featured in the linens, party straws, and paper lanterns

Creative Pool Party {or Playdate} Ideas for Little Swimmers

pool party tablescape

Last month, I had the opportunity to style a fun Pool Party Playdate event hosted by Huggies® Little Swimmers, and as awesome as it was to hang out at a super cool beach house venue for a day and be treated to professional catering (I still think this is the cutest watermelon shark fruit salad ever!) – those probably aren’t the same circumstances that most of the pool parties and swim playdates this summer will be held under, right? ;) SO… I was very happy when they also asked me to “bring the party home” so to speak – and to share some creative pool party or playdate inspiration with you guys in a home setting, and with more of a DIY perspective.

Pool Party Playdate at Home

All of the images shown here feature the same general look & feel as the event, but the set up is in my own backyard. Sonny (my husband) took the pics, and of course our kids were more than happy to jump into them as well, including our 2 year old, who was downright ecstatic to see Ariel prominently featured on her Little Swimmers diaper. Ah… the little things! And speaking of little things, the color-blocked party favor bags filled with mini Swedish fish made me equally ecstatic, especially given how easy they were to make!

toddler pool party swim centerpieces

I’m not sure if it’s the bright primary colors, the happy “snorkeling” whales, or a combo of both, but as far as my own projects go, this has quickly become a personal favorite… I hope you enjoy it too! Added bonus: you’ll find links below to some free printables as well!

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:

– DIY styrofoam beach ball garland + beach towel table runners
– Whale & submarine bath toy caddies-turned party decor with a little spray-paint + fun fillers!
– Beach pails filled with “little swimmer” snacks + no-spill mini milk bottles for drinks
– Bubbly “POOL” centerpiece made from wooden letters + blue tissue confetti & glue dots
– Submarine sandwiches embellished with bendy straws + rainbow licorice “pool noodles”

New “Party in a Jar” Book {Craft + Party + Giveaway!}

Party in a Jar Book

For the past several years, it seems the party industry has had a love affair with the humble little jar – from pretty mason jar drinks and upcycled centerpieces to favor/gift jars filled with all kinds of tasty treats. That’s why the {brand new!} book I’m going to tell you about today is just so wonderfully appropriate…

And listen up, moms, because while Party in a Jar is cute enough to be admired by anyone that loves all things creative & cute, author Vanessa Rodriguez Coppoloa (from penned it especially with the little ones in mind! It’s filled with 16 Kid-Friendly Projects for parties, holidays, & special occasions. Here’s a peek at one of my favorites… I mean, what’s not to love about a project called “Grass Hair Funny Face“, right?! ;)

Kids Party Jar Grass Activity

Another project that jumped out at me during my first flip-through of the book is the “Peanut Butter Piggy Bank Jar” on page 38 – talk about major cute factor! All of the projects in Party in a Jar are written “recipe style”, and one very cool thing is that most can double as both a party activity and a take-home gift/favor.

Also, these crafts don’t actualy require a party – they’re also great homemade gift ideas for holidays (check out the “Pumpkin Play Dough Jars” and “Snowman Candle Jars“, for example) – and of course you can always just use them as fun projects for keeping your little ones busy!

Scroll down for a sneak peek at what’s inside… and don’t forget to enter the giveaway! 5 HWTM readers will receive a a signed copy of Party in a Jar + a Dinosaur Terrarium kit (one of the projects featured in the book). (more…)
