DIY “Birthday Cake” Centerpiece + Free Printables Blog Hop

DIY Birthday Cake Centerpiece + Free Printables Blog Hop

I’m using month #6 of our year-long Free Printables Blog Hop as an excuse to finally share the details on a crafty little birthday party DIY project that I dreamed up quite a while back! {And if you haven’t already guessed, the theme of this month’s printables is “Happy Birthday”. Scroll down for a sneak peek of the designs from the other participating blogs + links to all of their projects!}

DIY Birthday Cake Centerpiece

One of the best things about this project is the versatility – it can be tailored to match pretty much any color palette or party theme by switching up the papers and embellishments used to decorate the “cake”. However, if you’d like to recreate the exact look featured in this example, you can do that too… because the patterned papers (and matching Napkin Rings!) can be downloaded for free here, in Letter Size or Tabloid Size and all of the other elements are readily available at major craft stores. Here’s a peek at the 2 smaller “cakes” that I made to bookend the main one:

And pictured above and below are two of the 4 napkin ring designs… which will make tying your centerpieces and place settings together easy as cake! ;)

Pedestal Birthday Cake Centerpiece – DIY Tutorial

You’ll Need:
– round paper mache box (I used a 9″ here)
– two 6″ unfinished wood circles (available in the wood crafts aisle)
– spray paint
– patterned paper
– ribbon(s) & rhinestones of choice
– unfinished wood candlestick
– spray adhesive or glue stick
– hot glue gun

Instructions:
1. Paint the lid of the box, the bottom of the box base, the candlestick, and the two 6″ wood rounds.
2. Cover the box base with patterned paper and embellish the rim of the box lid with rick-rack or other trim.
3. Hot glue the 6″ wood rounds to both sides of the candlestick to create the pedestal, then use hot glue or glue dots to secure the “cake” to the top of the pedestal. Embellish as desired. (I added some rhinestones and sequins to the base of the pedestal for extra sparkle!)

For the Cake Topper & “Sparkles”:
– wooden numbers (or letters)
– craft glitter
– tinseled yarn + metallic pipe cleaners
– floral wire

Instructions:
1. Cover the wooden numbers with craft glitter. (I like to use spray adhesive for glittering)
2. Hot glue the numbers to the center of the cake lid, holding them upright until the glue is dry.
3. Use tinseled yarn and metallic pipe cleaners to create small poms and “starbursts” that resemble sparkles. Hot glue them to floral wire, then insert the wire into the top of the cake to create a festive “sparkly” look.

Small 2-Tier Birthday “Cakes” {DIY}

For the smaller tiered cakes, simply decorate 2 smaller sizes of round paper mache boxes and stack them on top of each other. I just made a small yarn pom for the topper and embellished the rim of the bottom box with sequin trim… super easy! (You could also create a larger tiered cake for your main centerpiece if you don’t want to mess with created a cake pedestal.)
