Colorful & Eclectic Summer Dinner Party {+ Free Printables}

eclectic dinner party with a yoga frog and mini tassel garland

As far as my typical weeknights go, last night pretty much took the {fresh-fruit-topped-boston-cream} cake.

I invited a few girlfriends over for dinner as part of a collaboration with Pier 1. There was yummy food, sparkling sangria, the glow of twinkle lights… and a giant gold Yoga Frog covered in butterflies. ;) But before I further explain that, a quick side note:

Even though the initial plan for this dinner party started quite a while back, life has been extra stressful this month, so this ended up being a 100%-done-on-the-day-of, comedic whirlwind to pull together. This included (amongst other things) “speed cleaning” the party prep mess by shoving stuff into every nearby drawer and cabinet while the doorbell rang, and designing the menus and place cards on my laptop from the chair of a hair salon with my head covered in foils. It was a long overdue appointment that I was unable to move, so I multi-tasked instead. There was also a decent amount of toddler/kid bribing via my (mostly futile) attempts to gain a few extra minutes of setting up in peace. Long story short, juggling a lot of responsibilities in life can often can get overwhelming – but, after a healthy dose of chatting, laughing, and general silliness last night at the party, I was once again reminded that:

Sometimes being overwhelmed by life makes “friend dates” and outside-the-box moments all the more appreciated – and necessary! Read on for a peek at how everything turned out…

eclectic dinner party table setting and crafty paper lanterns

One of my very favorite things about throwing parties is the opportunity to surprise guests with unexpected details. This is pretty much where the aforementioned Yoga Frog comes in… I don’t do yoga or collect frogs, but for some reason I was totally drawn to this peaceful little guy on my shopping trip to Pier 1. I wanted this backyard dinner party to be fun and eclectic and exude “good vibes only”… so with a mini tissue tassel garland and a handful of colorful butterflies, he became the perfectly quirky mascot for the party. You can download the good vibes sign below, too! ;)

Here are some of my other favorite party details to look out for:
– The most beautiful, glossy indigo blue and aqua melamine dinnerware
– Colorful Baked Feta (appetizer) topped with tomatoes and olives + rich & creamy Parmesan Risotto
– DIY burlap “placemats”+ paper lanterns embellished with tissue tassels & ribbon
– White Wine Sangria Sparkler served in acrylic wine glasses
– “Cell Phone Siesta” station (hint, hint!), decked out with mini “cushions” and butterflies

While there’s a lot to love about social media, what I don’t love is looking around a table and seeing everyone glued to their phone, which is a habit so many of us have adopted (yours truly included). This adorable Swingasan® Phone Holder + a playful sign felt like a cute, non-scoldy way to help keep screen time at a minimum. Also pictured above: San Martin Chairs in yellow & ocean + Amelia Table.

I was instantly smitten with these intricate Bohemian Mercury Hanging Lanterns. We don’t have a patio trellis, so they just sat pretty as a centerpiece instead. ;) Couldn’t resist the mini version of the yoga frog either. I made a little silhouette banner for it to hold:

Cheers! {Gold craft balls + skewers = sparkly stir sticks, and twine adds a touch of rustic flair to acrylic wine glasses.} (more…)

A Detailed How-To on Reusing Party Decorations {Train & Batman}

 photo BatmanandTrainDessertTables.jpg

Hello! Rachel here from RV Parties to share a fun, new concept — TWO different parties reusing many of the same decorations! Like many families, my boys have birthdays within a few weeks of each other and (of course!) they couldn’t be persuaded to pick a theme for a joint party. My five year old needed a Batman Party and my three year old just had to have (his second!) Train Party. Because I knew I wasn’t going to able to restrain myself and throw simple parties, I went ahead and decided to throw them their own individual parties but make them overlap as much as possible to keep the planning as easy as possible! Black, white and yellow are a natural color choice for Batman — and it was easy to design the train party printables to match.Some of our cost (and time!) saving measures were:

  • Using black and white as the main colors — black and white printing is much cheaper than color
  • Making double batches of treats for the dessert table
  • Reusing linens, serving pieces and decor
  • Using engineer prints as wall decor
  • Buying store bought treats to dress up and reusing the extras for the second party

Modern Train Party Details

Now without further ado, here’s a quick look at each party, then a comparison of some of the changes. The train party was up first — one of my favorite details was this cupcake choo choo made from graham crackers and Oreos. As always, Heather from Fondant Fantasy knocked it out of the park with the fondant toppers! I’m shocked by how closely she matched our train silhouette and love the railroad crossing sign with the B and 3 rather than the RR.

The Look for Less: Candy Buffet vs. Dessert Tables

Tonya Coleman here from Soireé Event Design, and I’m back with the “Look for Less” where I share with you some ways to achieve a high-end looking event for less by using my tips. Today’s post is all about Candy Buffets versus Dessert Tables and how you can save hundreds of dollars by creating a fabulous looking Candy Buffet for your next event. Here I designed a Beach Bridal theme showing both a candy table and a dessert table for 85 guests. Be sure to scroll down to the end of the post to see a detailed budget on both tables and see the savings.

Sweet City Candy is a hassle-free online candy vendor that I used to purchase all of the candy shown on the candy table. Their selection is great and super easy to order with their option to search for candy by color! Not only do they have some of the most affordable candy online right now, but now they offer free shipping for orders over $65! This is HUGE considering candy is very heavy and most candy companies charge shipping based on weight which can sometimes blow your budget!

DIY “Birthday Cake” Centerpiece + Free Printables Blog Hop

diy birthday cake centerpiece tutorial

I’m using month #6 of our year-long Free Printables Blog Hop as an excuse to finally share the details on a crafty little birthday party DIY project that I dreamed up quite a while back! {And if you haven’t already guessed, the theme of this month’s printables is “Happy Birthday”. Scroll down for a sneak peek of the designs from the other participating blogs + links to all of their projects!}

DIY Birthday Cake Centerpiece

One of the best things about this project is the versatility – it can be tailored to match pretty much any color palette or party theme by switching up the papers and embellishments used to decorate the “cake”. However, if you’d like to recreate the exact look featured in this example, you can do that too… because the patterned papers (and matching Napkin Rings!) can be downloaded for free here, in Letter Size or Tabloid Size and all of the other elements are readily available at major craft stores. Here’s a peek at the 2 smaller “cakes” that I made to bookend the main one:

Creative Toy Soldier Camo Birthday Party

Attention!! Gretchen of Three Little Monkeys Studio knows her son is a toy soldier fan, so when his birthday rolled around, what better way to celebrate than with a Toy Soldier Camo Birthday Party?! Not only is this party beautifully done (boy parties can be beautiful too!) but the activity ideas look so fun and creative! I am especially loving the Army tank painting — I know so many kids that could sit and do that for hours! Forward march to see all of the amazing details!

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:

  • Mess Hall food & dessert table with food trays, soldier-approved treats & a camo netting backdrop
  • “Local Vegetation” veggie cups, camo cookies, grenade cake pops, & a toy soldier chocolate rock cake
  • Outdoor supplies tent with soldier helmets and camp pillows + an outdoor water balloon “grenade” fight
  • Survival kits with party popper grenades & toy soldier party favors
