Halloween Styling: 11 Creative Ideas for ANY Spooky Soirée

Easy & Effective Halloween Party Styling Ideas

We’ve already featured a ton of inspiring Halloween parties from many creative & talented people this year, so I wanted to do a different sort of Halloween post myself… one that highlights several different DIY food & styling ideas that could be utilized in any Halloween themed celebration (large or small), and really focuses on the “how to” behind each of them.

So, below you’ll find 11 such ideas – from food & drinks to decor. I’ll break down the “idea table” pictured above with make-it-yourself details and links to all of the recipes, which also happen to be low in sugar (GASP!). I figure we all know how to get our hands on Halloween sugar at this point. ;) So whether you’re hosting a big party or just looking to make a festive Halloween snack at home, I hope you can have some fun with these!

And as a quick side note on how this project came about – I was asked to do a super last minute Halloween segment on a local news station last week, so I started designing & shopping for this table at 6pm on Wednesday evening, and had it at the news station at 8:30am Thursday morning. Needless to say I didn’t sleep much that night, but the takeaway is that if Sonny and I can pull all of this together in one night, there’s definitely still time for you to use some of these ideas before Halloween on Thursday!

diy creepy potion jars for halloween

1. Creepy Potion Jars

It’s easy to make creepy “potion ingredients” from simple items and colored water. Here, cauliflower + black water = “Zombie Brains”, plastic snake + black water = “Snake Venom”, and sand = “Bone Dust”.  Add decorative labels and tint the water black to make the ingredients even creepier! I bought the apothecary jars at HomeGoods several years ago and this is probably the zillionth time they’ve been used… they are SUCH a great party staple to keep on hand. (They still carry them!) Halloween Drink Recipe: Ghoul-egranate Punch

Low Calorie Halloween Drink Recipe

Yesterday morning I went on one of our local news stations in San Diego to talk about Halloween Party Ideas – and decided to focus on creative food & drink ideas that are actually lower in sugar. (We’ll be sharing photos of everything from the segment soon, but in the meantime you can check out some sneak peeks on Instagram!)

One of my favorite things on the table was this super easy and light Halloween Drink Recipe: Ghoul-egranate Punch with a “Speared Eyeball” Garnish. This is a pomegranate juice based punch that’s been significantly lightened up by cutting the juice with club soda and adding sweetness with a no-calorie sweetener. You can actually reduce the calories or sugar in any of your favorite juice or soda based drinks using the same exact method. For Halloween celebrations, the “eyeball” garnish definitely adds a playful, creepy element! Learn how to make it below… (more…)

(Reduced-Fat) Smoky Cheddar Tombstone Sandwiches

Smoky Cheddar Tombstone Sandwiches - Halloween

When it comes to Halloween, it’s pretty easy to figure out how to get your hands on sugary treats. I will admit that the amount of “fun size” candy I’ve personally consumed already is already verging on SCARY… and it’s not even October 31st yet! :0

On the flip side, it IS possible to serve up super cute Halloween eats that go easy on the sugar while still delivering on the “sweet”. One way to do this is to swap out some or all of the sugar in your recipes with a zero calorie sweetener like NECTRESSE®, who I’ve teamed up with on 2 festive Halloween recipes that still deliver the sweetness without tons of sugar.

I’m excited to share the first one with you below – these (Reduced-Fat) Smoky Cheddar Tombstone Sandwiches are a little bit sweet and a little bit savory. This recipe is so fun to put together, especially setting it up in the kale “graveyard”! You can use a cookie cutter or simply freehand-cut the tombstone shapes (we’ve done it both ways) – just don’t forget to pipe on the “RIP” in mustard for the finishing touch. ;) (more…)

{Fall Inspiration} Iconography: Birds & Woodland Creatures

Fall Inspiration - Woodland Creature Inspired Products

It’s amazing how I’m always ready for the seasons to change… and this time year is no exception… Bring on the rich color palettes, the rustic tabletops, the cooler weather, and the {sometimes spiked} hot apple cider! ;)

Feeling Inspired by Nature…

Animals have always been one of my favorite design elements, and I really want to incorporate them into our Thanksgiving celebration this year. I’m feeling super inspired by all the different Woodland Creature and Bird elements from Target right now… the wooden fox and brass egrets (pictured above and below) both went in an out of my cart several times last week because I couldn’t decide which way to go (and I’m ridiculously terrible at returning things, so I like to make up my mind first if possible!).

Since there’s a good chance I’ll be documenting some of the details and DIY – and posting some free printables! – I’d love to know which theme inspires YOU more – or which one would you would rather see spun into a Thanksgiving or Fall Cocktail Party: Woodland Creatures or Birds of a Feather?

Why I’m not that offended by Martha Stewart. (Thoughts from a blogger of 7 years)

I know there’s been a lot of conversation around Martha’s recent “who are these bloggers” comments the past couple days, and – even as someone that’s been blogging for over 7 years – it wasn’t my initial instinct to publicly weigh in, partially because a lot has already been said, but mainly because for some reason I just wasn’t experiencing as strong of a reaction personally as most of the ones I’d seen.

At first I wondered what my deal was – why I wasn’t getting all up in arms like I should be – but after reflecting on the situation for a bit, I figured out the reason why I wasn’t having a strong reaction, and it honestly kind of surprised me! So… I decided to share a few thoughts on the situation after all, in hopes that an alternative perspective might offer some comfort – or at least food for thought – to fellow bloggers that may still be feeling a sting.

The reason I wasn’t all that offended by Martha’s generalized opinion is that… I don’t really care about it all that much. Period.

I have to admit it feels a little weird to say that out loud, and this may not have been the case a few years ago, but it’s true now. And I don’t mean it in the nonchalant “I could care less” attitude sort of way at all. I mean it in the “I sincerely just don’t think her opinion affects my life” sort of way. Here’s why: (more…)
