Tips for Mixing Different Patterns & Colors in Your Home

teal-and-yellow-room-design-board

I was recently asked to share some insight on how to mix and match different patterns and colors in your home. This is actually a topic I’ve been thinking about recently, because – while standing in a very slow line at the fabric store this past weekend – I had a really nice conversation with the lady behind me, who just happened to be struggling with this exact “patterns” issue on her quest to redecorate the family room.

WORKING WITH PATTERN & COLOR

While I don’t claim to have any formal interior design training (full disclosure!), I can definitely call on my graphic design background and experience styling event spaces to share some easy color and pattern pairing techniques. The overarching principles of designing a stylish everyday space are actually very similar to those of a well thought out party or event space. You want to make sure the entire color palette is carried consistently throughout the space, and that patterns are introduced in different ways that make the space look interesting and fun, but not overwhelming to the eye (although I’ll admit you can take a few more liberties at a temporary event than you can in your everyday living room!). You can definitely use a few different types of patterns as well – as long as the colors and styles of the patterns coordinate well. Variety is one of the things that keeps a space design interesting!

Here are the 4 simple rules I personally use when it comes to working with color and pattern:

teal-chevron-chair

1. Start with a few inspirational pieces.
This step is so incredibly important, and I’ve found that – at least in my personal experience – inspirational pieces are most often things like textiles or accent decor (pillows, artwork, vases, etc). I’m using the above accent pillows (Printed Flower and Yellow Geometric) and Zig Zag Chair from Target as my “inspiration” for the purposes of this example. It’s best to keep your inspirational pieces minimal, to somewhere between 1-4 items. (more…)

{Eco-Friendly} Rustic Wine and Cheese Party + $500 Party Package Giveaway & Free Printables

hwtm and glad cheese buffet

Winner update: 4/2/13: This giveaway is now closed. Thanks so much to everyone that entered! And the lucky random winner is… Commenter #329 LINDA SCHWARTZ! Congrats!

*****

I have a really fun Rustic Wine & Cheese Party party recap to share with you today… this is a backyard party that Sonny & I recently hosted at home, and it just so happens to include a $500 PARTY PACKAGE GIVEAWAY (woo-hoo!) in addition to eco-friendly party ideas, recipes, and FREE wine and cheese party printables!

THE “ONE BAG” CHALLENGE

To give you a little back story on how this party came about, we were asked to participate in Glad’s One Bag party challenge – which encourages hosts & hostesses to take a proactive role in reducing waste by limiting the amount of trash produced at their party to just ONE bag destined for the landfill, with everything else going to recycling or compost.

It was really fun dreaming up a few easy upcycled DIY decor projects for this party – and designing printable signs that could easily double as kitchen/dining decor after the party… they have a rustic chalkboard vibe and a bit of cheeky humor. You can download them for free below. ;)

Since we were given a lot of creative freedom as far as what kind of party to host, I chose a Rustic Wine & Cheese theme. The weather’s been beautiful so I thought an evening backyard party sounded like fun – and truth be told – as much as I love my 15 month and 3 year old, I really wanted a good excuse to invite some adult friends over for a little wine and grown up conversation! So that’s exactly we did… scroll down to see how it turned out!

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for…

– Upcycled wine bottles & tin cans – painted and embellished with twine & raffia
– DIY Wine Cork Frames and Wine Cork Hurricane
– Printable Trash, Compost, and Recycling station signs
– DIY bunting banners made from scrap fabric & twine

Easter Brunch Table Inspiration + Free Printables

blue and yellow Easter place setting

I was recently invited to design an Easter Brunch Tablescape inspired by a few of my favorite items from Target. Um…… twist my arm? ;)  Pretty sure I’ve dreamt up more than my fair share of tablescapes while browsing the aisles of Target season after season anyways, so this project was a no brainer!

Armed with a $100 gift card for the tablescape items and a very small window of shopping time (thanks to the restless 1 and 3 year olds in tow), I made a beeline for the seasonal dining & decor section at Target this weekend. At that moment I was 90% sure that the fabulous scalloped coral melamine plates I’d been admiring for weeks had finally found a legitimate excuse to land in my cart. And land in the cart they did…… for a few minutes at least. ;)

Scroll down to check out the final table, followed by details on the design process, easy styling tips to recreate this look at home, and links to download the free Easter printables!
