{DIY Tutorial} Mod + Merry Stir Sticks, Garland & Party Tray

geometric hot cocoa bar - colorful modern christmas

One of the questions I get asked most often regarding party styling is “where to you get your inspiration?”. The answer is literally from any & everywhere – but there’s usually one specific item that really grabs me and makes me want to design a party around it…. it could be a great dress, a beautiful book, even a song.

And in this particular case – where I was asked to highlight something from one of Target’s current holiday collections that inspired me – it was these particular geometric print mugs. The delicious colors, the fabulously mod pattern… definitely worthy of inspiring a celebration, don’tcha think? :) So I picked up a couple sets of the mugs and a few matching items at Target last night, and was on my merry way.

Here’s a peek at a few of the diy projects they inspired this morning, which are now going to make an upcoming night of Christmas prep with a few close friends just all the more merry & BRIGHT!

Rustic Joy Christmas Theme {Red, Gold, Chalkboard, Wood)

chalkboard christmas party print for hwtm - eat, drink and be joyful

Hi everyone! I’m excited to share a recent project with you today…This is a little different than my normal styled shoots though, because these pics are actually of a “preview” table that I mocked up in my living room a few weeks ago, then literally packed up and shipped off all the way across the country to New York City (about as far as you can get from San Diego!), where everything was then re-set up for a satellite media tour that I hosted for one of our current brand partners.

So instead of full set-ups, this table is displayed “news segment” style, where a bunch of different ideas are jam-packed onto one table. I still wanted to share these ideas with you though, in case you’re on the hunt for some Rustic-Mod inspiration for your own holiday celebration… or especially if you’re looking for new ways to personalize your table, since that was a big focus for me here, as you can see in the following image… :)

holiday centerpiece idea with pinecones and red ribbon

All of these ideas are very simple and approachable, from turning pics of your loved ones into decor to a super quick pinecone “Christmas Tree” that literally took me less than 10 mins (hot gluing included!). This table also features our brand new Rustic Joy Party Collection, which just became available on Hostess INK a few days ago. :)

CREATIVE HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:

– Cute Cinnamon Apple Pie Pops dressed up with baker’s twine (get the recipe here)
– Giant pinecone + faux red berries + small mason jar = cute & rustic “Christmas Tree” decoration!

Trend Alert: Bright Colors for Christmas Parties

bright colored pink and orange tulle party dress costume with green fascinator hat on a little girl

Tonya Coleman here from Soireé Event Design, and I’m back with the “Trend Alert” where I share with you some of the hottest trends in party planning! Today’s guest post is all about the hot new trend of decorating with BRIGHT COLORS FOR CHRISTMAS PARTIES! There are so many color options now available in Christmas decor besides the traditional red and green color palette. My favorites are the brightly colored Christmas decorations, which are perfect party decor for a cute, whimsical themed Christmas party like this Christmas Wonderland party I designed.

I LOVE Christmas! It’s a time of giving, spreading joy and of wonderment and excitement for children. After living in California for many years, I decided to do a theme this year that is a tribute to the summery Christmas’ spent there. I can remember quite a few years where we put up the tree with shorts on! Now living in Minnesota, where it is very cold and snow-covered at Christmas time, I thought it would be fun to design a summertime Christmas Wonderland theme to contrast with the frozen tundra outside my window.

Brightly Colored Outfits Set the Tone!

This gorgeous tutu dress from Atutudes, mini top hat from Cupcake Wishes and tulle pom wand from Titi’s Tutus was the perfect whimsical outfit for our guest of honor to wear to greet her friends and set the tone for this unique holiday theme. Each guest was also greeted with her own wand, tutu and top hat to wear during the party. (more…)

{DIY Decor} 3 Ways to Glam Up Your Fiesta Burros!

DIY Gold Pinata - Glam Fiesta Party Decor

What’s not to love about a GOLDEN burro, right?! Especially when she’s all decked out with glittery “baubles” and tissue paper flowers. ;) We really had fun with the DIY projects for my recent Gold & Glitzy Holiday Fiesta, so I wanted to highlight a few favorites that you could use to add some sparkle to your own fiesta at ANY time of year.

First up: 3 ways to glam up your fiesta burros.

I ordered regular size pinatas, mini pinatas, and donkey figurines off of Amazon. Then we let the gold spray paint and embellishments fly… until these burros were fully transformed into their “cocktail attire”! I love surprising party guests with unexpected decorations, and these fun little projects definitely fit the bill. Scroll down for a closer peek at each before & after.

Fresh & Sophisticated Dinner Party {Black, White & Gold}

This is such great inspiration for any co-ed, grown-up celebration! As an added bonus, the party’s bartender, Greg Mays, is generously giving away the recipe to the most popular cocktail of the night (and it sounds seriously delicious). Cheers to the grads!

Sweet & Sparkly Bubbly Bar {New Year’s Eve & Beyond!}

Michelle Champagne Glitter Bubble Bar for New Years Eve

When I think of New Year’s Eve celebrations, images of sparkle, fun, and all-around excitement immediately dance in my head. So when Michelle Sparkling Wines asked me to dream up a NYE Inspired Bubbly Station for them, those are the exact qualities I wanted to infuse into the design!

Armed with craft supplies, a few holiday accents, and a whole LOT of glitter, I set out to create a drink station that felt like a party all on its own. The goal was a look that was stylish, glam, and anything but stuffy. I also wanted the bubbly station to hint at a New Year’s Eve theme, but also provide usable inspiration for other occasions, like winter wonderland parties and seasonal bridal showers (wouldn’t this same look be cute with pink accents & Brut Rosé?!), so the DIY clock element features a versatile “TIME to celebrate!” message instead of the traditional “countdown” verbiage that you typically see.

When the clock strikes midnight on New Years Eve drink Michelle Sparking Wines, shown in the glittery gold and blue champagne bar

I hope you like how this bubbly station turned out, because you’ll find all the how-to details below, in case you want to bring something similar to life at your own celebration… whether it’s just an idea or two, or the whole sparkly shebang! P.S. There are some free printables awaiting you below too. Enjoy! :)

SPECIAL DETAILS to look out for:

– DIY Clock accent with sparkly numbers + printable “time to celebrate” banners
– Flag drink stirrers made from glittery ribbon + blinged-out champagne flutes
– Crystal decanters decked out with craft rhinestones & printable labels
– Free-standing “mini backdrop” reminiscent of floating bubbles

Whimsical woodland parties are all the rage right now — which I am loving! Khaliah Bibson of The Party Muse pulled out all the stops for this Modern & Vibrant Woodland Birthday Party for 3 year-old Olivia. Strewn petals and pinecones kept the woodsy feel going, while contrasting nicely with bright colors and modern patterns.

{Fabulous!} Tacky Christmas Engagement Party

Tacky Christmas engagement party invitation with retro fonts and sweater cross-stitching details

This Tacky Christmas (in July) Engagement Party is absolutely anything but! Katie from Kate & Company Events planned this super fun and extremely thoughtful celebration for her best friend Lauren and husband-to-be Drew, who actually met at a Tacky Christmas Party four years earlier.

I love that she even found a way to incorporate some of the couples’ family’s traditions — such as a “Find the Pickle” game and Grandma’s famous potato salad — as well as details from the day they met. Plus, who doesn’t love a good beer-can Christmas tree?! Bet they had fun getting the “ornaments” ready for that display! ;)

Nostalgic Christmas with a Modern Twist {Holiday Decor}

nostalgic red and gray christmas decor

Happy first Monday of December! Does is feel odd you that it’s already December? Because I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around that fact myself – the gap between Thanksgiving and December 1st was way too short this year. And I just realized that means Christmas is barely more than 3 weeks away – yikes!! Guess it’s REALLY time to get started on those Christmas decorations…

When it comes to decorating for Christmas, I usually opt for a modern look and non-traditional colors – but as you can see from my Instagram post from Target a few weeks ago, the cozy warmth of a more traditional look is really inspiring me to change things up a bit this year.

plaid christmas decor and felt reindeer

I love how the Winter Start collection at Target gives the nostalgic Christmas look a more modern feel by mixing mod silhouettes with plaid and felt textures. Some of my favorite items from this collection are pictured here (hello, adorable felt fox and reindeer!). You can find the shopping links to everything below, followed by a few Rustic Christmas Party Ideas inspired by this same look – because we all know that it makes life so much easier when your holiday party decor matches your holiday home decor… especially when you only have a few weeks to get ready! ;) (more…)
