PARTY DETAILS, as told by Gretchen…
For my daughter’s 5th birthday, she decided she wanted a magical unicorn party. She wanted rainbow colors, sprinkles, gold glitter and flowers, so I set out to design a party that was bright, colorful and had a bit of fantasy.
We decided to have her party around lunch time and then follow with desserts. I served sack lunches with PB&J sandwiches, carrots, apples and juice. I wrapped juice box labels around the juice and tied them with a pretty gold ribbon. To add a personal touch, Madeline colored every candy cup in rainbow colors, and I used them to serve the carrots with a touch of ranch dressing in the bottom of the cup. I made very simple apple pops with wood lollipop sticks topped with a rainbow flag and a pretty bow in gold twine from Target’s Dollar Spot. The lunches were tucked into baskets I made out of old school paper lunch bags with a pretty gold foil doily from Knot & Bow as the finishing touch.
For dessert, Madeline wanted donuts instead of a cake, so I stacked them and tucked in homemade felt flowers for color. I also served cupcakes, cookies and chocolate-covered Oreos. Linda from Frog Prince Cake and Cookie Design made the cookies to perfectly match Madeline’s invitation. She even added glitter! They were so sparkly and yummy. Maria of Love & Sugar Kisses also matched the invitation and made adorable glittery fondant-covered Oreos with unicorns and the number 5.
In my mind, I kept picturing the beautiful forests in the movie Legend, minus the creepy goblins and scary Tim Curry (sorry, Tim!). To create that magical forest feel, I covered a vintage desk with sheet moss from Hobby Lobby, some stones from the garden and my kids and I collected wildflowers in the country to make all of our floral arrangements in the blue Ball anniversary jars. To compliment that forest feel, I found some inexpensive wood cake stands and wood slices to use to serve my treats on, and I decorated a plain boxwood wreath with a glittered unicorn and letter “M” for the backdrop. I placed it on an old vintage glass window and draped a small rainbow banner for more color.
I designed a new set of printables for her in bright rainbow colors with a pink unicorn (her favorite color) and gold stars (her favorite shape), which complimented the custom glittery name banner made by the The Purple Pug, and the beautiful rainbow tassel garland by The Flair Exchange that I hung up along with a banner from my collection. They added so much color to the party!
To add lots of sparkle, I took inexpensive unicorn figurines from US Toy and spray painted them with gold glitter spray paint (Rustoleum is the best!). Those little unicorns were scattered all around the party and made fun favors for our guests to take home.
Bethany of Sweet Georgia Sweet made a beautiful rainbow ribbon wreath with rosettes and a glitter letter M. It was the perfect way to welcome our guests. She also made a pretty ribbon garland I used to decorate the desk that served as our buffet.
THE BIRTHDAY OUTFIT
Lani of Elle Dee Designs made the prettiest rainbow chevron dress for Madeline. The colors were perfect, and Madeline couldn’t stop twirling in it.
I contacted Bridget of Imagine Hat as soon as Madeline nailed down her theme, and she designed a plush Unicorn Party Hat that Madeline wore at the party and in the photo on the back of her invitation, which I placed in a frame at the party. Madeline was so surprised and loved that hat!
To keep our little guests entertained, I covered the top of our large coffee table with kraft paper wrapping paper from the dollar store. It pulled double duty as a table cloth for eating and a giant coloring page. I drew unicorns, stars, rainbows and flowers on the paper with a Sharpie and set out crayons for the kids to color. It made clean up a breeze later on, because I could just roll it up–trash and all! I also made fun little Mad Libs sheets so the kids could write a funny story about a unicorn.
After dessert, we sent the kids outside to bounce in a castle-shaped bounce house we rented for the day. After our guests left I bounced a bit myself. I have no idea how those kiddos could keep that up. I was tired after 5 minutes.
For party favors, I really wanted to involve Madeline in creating something special for her friends, and she chose to make number 5 cookies. She loves baking! It was hard to find a cookie recipe that didn’t spread, but after a few attempts we finally succeeded, and she frosted and sprinkled them to her heart’s content. I put them in small glassine bags sealed with washi tape, and tucked them into muslin bags from a Pick Your Plum deal. Before stuffing the bags, I took a unicorn stamp I purchased from Blue Diamond Stamps and stamped on the bags in gold ink for a fun keepsake. Then I added a tag that said, “Thank you for celebrating with me. It was magical!” She loved her cookies so much that she wanted to use one as a topper on her donut cake.
My mom also made all of our guests unicorn horns out of styrofoam cones spray painted gold with elastic. They were so cute!
