Winner update: 4/2/13: This giveaway is now closed. Thanks so much to everyone that entered! And the lucky random winner is… Commenter #329 LINDA SCHWARTZ! Congrats!

I have a really fun Rustic Wine & Cheese Party party recap to share with you today… this is a backyard party that Sonny & I recently hosted at home, and it just so happens to include a $500 PARTY PACKAGE GIVEAWAY (woo-hoo!) in addition to eco-friendly party ideas, recipes, and FREE wine and cheese party printables!

To give you a little back story on how this party came about, we were asked to participate in Glad’s One Bag party challenge – which encourages hosts & hostesses to take a proactive role in reducing waste by limiting the amount of trash produced at their party to just ONE bag destined for the landfill, with everything else going to recycling or compost.

It was really fun dreaming up a few easy upcycled DIY decor projects for this party – and designing printable signs that could easily double as kitchen/dining decor after the party… they have a rustic chalkboard vibe and a bit of cheeky humor. You can download them for free below. ;)

Since we were given a lot of creative freedom as far as what kind of party to host, I chose a Rustic Wine & Cheese theme. The weather’s been beautiful so I thought an evening backyard party sounded like fun – and truth be told – as much as I love my 15 month and 3 year old, I really wanted a good excuse to invite some adult friends over for a little wine and grown up conversation! So that’s exactly we did… scroll down to see how it turned out!

This was a fun & casual Wine & Cheese party we held in our backyard… I wanted it to have a bit of a rustic vibe, so we used elements like chalkboard paint, wood, raffia, twine, and chalkboard-themed printables to create this feel.

Painted tin cans and wine bottles created a nice pop of color… blue might seem like a strange color choice for a wine party, but that’s the color of our backyard, and it makes decorating much easier when your color palette matches your space. It actually makes it more eco-friendly too – because utilizing the colors in the space you already have means you need less decor to pull everything together – and you can reuse the decor you actually do create!

To help keep things eco-friendly, I followed several of the tips found in Glad’s One Bag Party Toolkit, which you can download right here. We used real dishes, napkins, glasses, etc, created upcycled and reusable party decor, set up stations for trash/recycling/compost, etc. With a little planning, it was actually very easy to keep the true waste to “one bag”!

I love, love, LOVE the “temporarily” personalized plates, they are so cute. I’m living in Eastern Europe right now, and find it really difficult to buy biodegradable plates for parties. We do a lot of entertaining, and I hate to waste paper and plastic, but they just don’t have the biodegradable options here. We already use cloth napkins all the time, but this is a brilliant idea that I’m definitely going to try! Thanks!

  10. Alli Brown says:

I LOVED the create your own bruschetta! My friends all like theirs made a little differently, so it’s such a fun idea to allow your guests to personalize to their taste. Also, thanks for the free printables, they are so cute!

I love the chalk board elements. The wine-cork saver in the vase then all the ideas for re-using all those corks. Too much fun!

  16. Tiffany Walsh says:

    i love the chalkboard elements!

  17. amy mcafee says:

Everything is perfect! I love the simplicity of the decor… corks, chalk,
fun signs even down to the trash can! I turn the big 5-0 next year…I may just
throw this party for myself! :)

  18. Laura H. Jean says:

Love this! I actually have a wine club that meets at my house, so I’m always looking for ways to upcycle the bottles and corks. I’ve been saving the corks to make trivets, keychains, cheese spreaders and magnets. The bottles I’ve used for olive oil (just clean and add an oil dispenser top), dish soap ( the screw on top bottles work great for pumps) and tiki torches! I think I’ll def have to try this theme for one of our meetings! :)

  19. What a fun party! I love the witty wine signs. It’s “wine-o-clock! Aren’t we lucky” – so cute and clever. And all of the food looks delicious! What a great idea.

  23. Bonnie B says:

How do you pick one element of this party to love? As always you have fabulous ideas & remarkable creativity in pulling them off! It is wonderful to see so many ideas pulling from “what you have” and not running out to buy things to fit every theme. Taking trash & turning it into party treasure is inspiring – it makes me want to look at things differently.

  24. Sarah Wright says:

Great setup! Love the blue table the food looks so yummy! Great job and thank you for the inspiration!

  25. jessica w says:

  31. Jennifer D says:

I love the personalized plates and the slate serving tray!

  32. LaReshea McCoy says:

This party was truly amazing and creative!! My favorite element of the party were the framed quotes.. in a world that revolves around a ” hurry up and do or go” mentality it is important to remember to make time for the little things in life that brings us joy! Whether its a glass of wine, stopping to smell roses, or making our communities better by recycling’s the little details that count!!:))) If I were to win I would use the theme to create awareness about the benefits of recycling and have a sip of wine in the process-Great party!!

  33. Veronica says:

I love everything here, but my fave is the printable Trash, Compost, and Recycling station signs.

My family thinks I’m obsessed with recycling. They’re probably right. After every party I go through the trash to make sure that recycling and trash is properly sorted.

I have plans to make some form of the printable trash, compost and recycling station signs for every party (my color coded recycling bags are soooooo not working…lol).

  34. Tobi Drabczyk says:

I like the personal plates, and the it is temporary makes it even better.

  35. kellen says:

The entire party is a fabulous idea but I absolutely LOVE the wooden block wine displays!

  36. Rustic Honey says:

This is similar to a wedding shower I hosted! It was such a good time. I love this theme and it is beautiful and simple.

  37. Pam says:

Love this party! Where did you get the chalk that has a point for writing on the plates? I need something like that.

  38. Liz B. says:

Awesome party – can’t go wrong with a wine theme!

  39. Jenn says:

I love the wine table set-up. I also love the signs on everything!

  40. lesley johnston says:

i LOVE the wine cork frames/signs…..i have developed an obsession to cork projects that i want to try. i have the corks but have had trouble cutting them so i need to pick back up on that idea and work on all the projects lined up!
