{Semi-DIY} Spring Decorating: Modern Beach Pop

diy beach themed room makeover

On a recent shopping trip to Target, I instantly fell in love this this mod sea urchin inspired vase from the Threshold™ line. It has the look of some of the really high end designer vases, but a fraction of the price tag at $16.99. Yay :) I also grabbed its little buddy – another sea-creature-like tea light holder – for $5.99. If you’re not familiar with Threshold by Target yet, check out the fun little shopping video at the bottom of this post get quick feel for their {very chic} style!

Our living room is super neutral, which makes it easy to introduce different looks/colors from time to time via accessories and small decor. I’ve kind of been on a “beach” kick lately anyways (probably a side effect of the weather warming up!), so I decided to go for a “mini room makeover” with a Mod Beach vibe that incorporated the breezy blue, bright coral, and bright yellow colors that are popping up everywhere lately.

I’m calling this makeover “semi DIY” because there’s definitely a combo of store-bought and DIY elements to it. DIY isn’t always necessary, but it’s a fun excuse to get crafty for a bit (I only spent a couple hours on this project) – and it allows you to get those small details in – the ones that often tie everything together and make a design look polished/finished.

For this project, I redecorated a couple of the console tables in our living room and made some simple wall hangings to replace the 3 frames that having been hanging above it for years. Time to change things up a bit! The main elements I used were ocean themed accent decor and a Threshold™ Shell Print curtain panel that was used for everything but the window ;) – plus seashells and few shades of acrylic craft paint that were used on the sea shells and starfish. This was all done while the kids were asleep last night, over the course of just a few hours, so pretty darn quick! Scroll down to see the rest of the pics – and to download the free printable sign I made for the 4×6 coral frame, which features a famous (and ocean relevant) Emerson quote. Hope this inspires you to do some “Semi DIY” of your own this Spring! ;)

“Go Baby, Go!” Operation Shower {Baby Shower Recap}

go baby go hostess with the mostess printables inspired cake by hey there cupcake

I’m so excited to bring you a visual recap of a recent Operation Shower event held in my hometown of San Diego, CA… at the beautiful Torrey Pines Golf Course, nonetheless! Operation Shower baby showers are always amazing – for different several reasons (learn more about them here) – but this one is especially near and dear because the event’s theme was inspired by the Go Baby, Go Baby Shower Collection from HWTM!

There were lots of incredibly talented designers and sweets vendors involved, all who generously donated their own time/effort for the event, and it was so much fun to see how each of them incorporated the transportation themed printables into their work and put their own unique twist on the theme. You can also see how we styled this same theme for a home baby shower right here.

Because there is so much to see, we’re splitting this recap into 3 parts. Scroll down for a peek at the overall event and awesome dessert table – complete with suitcases and puffy felt clouds! – and stay tuned for the table recaps coming in Part 2 and Part 3. One thing is for sure… if you’re on the lookout for transportation themed baby shower ideas, you’re in LUCK – because there’s definitely no shortage of them here. Ready, set, GO……! ;)

Clever & Healthy Fruit Snack Ideas {Web Round Up}

hungry caterpillar fruit snack idea for kids

Being a party inspiration resource, we feature a lot of sweets and decadent treats here at HWTM… and I mean a LOT! That’s one of the reasons I was excited to be asked to participate in a program with Naked Juice highlighting unique ways to increase your intake of fruits and veggies – you know… the good-for-you stuff. :)

I thought this would be a great excuse to finally feature a round up of cute, creative, and HEALTHY “treats” from ’round the web made completely from fruit. You won’t find a drop of frosting or a pat of butter in these clever treats, and there’s a good chance that kids will even greet them with the same enthusiasm usually reserved for the beloved chocolate chip cookie. There are also some presentation ideas here worthy of grown up celebrations too… including an amazing Fresh Fruit Cake and the “Traffic Light” Smoothie Flight drink display from a transportation themed baby shower that I styled last year.

Here goes with the full round-up, starting from the top:

Candy and dessert bars have become a must-have item at many parties, however, they can get pretty pricey! A less expensive alternative to candy is cookies. Girl Scout cookies just so happen to be my favorite AND it’s the only time of year you can buy them, so I’ve designed a high-end looking Milk and Cookies Bar for a Noah’s Ark themed baby shower featuring my top 3 favorite Girl Scout cookies: Tagalongs, Thin Mints and Samoas! Be sure to scroll down for my 3 Look for Less Tips to creating a high-end looking dessert table for less.

Tips for Mixing Different Patterns & Colors in Your Home

I was recently asked to share some insight on how to mix and match different patterns and colors in your home. This is actually a topic I’ve been thinking about recently, because – while standing in a very slow line at the fabric store this past weekend – I had a really nice conversation with the lady behind me, who just happened to be struggling with this exact “patterns” issue on her quest to redecorate the family room.

While I don’t claim to have any formal interior design training (full disclosure!), I can definitely call on my graphic design background and experience styling event spaces to share some easy color and pattern pairing techniques. The overarching principles of designing a stylish everyday space are actually very similar to those of a well thought out party or event space. You want to make sure the entire color palette is carried consistently throughout the space, and that patterns are introduced in different ways that make the space look interesting and fun, but not overwhelming to the eye (although I’ll admit you can take a few more liberties at a temporary event than you can in your everyday living room!). You can definitely use a few different types of patterns as well – as long as the colors and styles of the patterns coordinate well. Variety is one of the things that keeps a space design interesting!

Here are the 4 simple rules I personally use when it comes to working with color and pattern:

1. Start with a few inspirational pieces.
This step is so incredibly important, and I’ve found that – at least in my personal experience – inspirational pieces are most often things like textiles or accent decor (pillows, artwork, vases, etc). I’m using the above accent pillows (Printed Flower and Yellow Geometric) and Zig Zag Chair from Target as my “inspiration” for the purposes of this example. It’s best to keep your inspirational pieces minimal, to somewhere between 1-4 items. (more…)
