PARTY DETAILS, as told by Stephanie

I have the same birthday as one of my husband’s best friends. We decided this year to celebrate together with a dinner party that included our two families and another family we are both friends with. There were three kids in attendance, a one year old and 2 two year olds.

Using our Spaceships and Laser Beams Mad Science Birthday Party Collection, I developed a party with a bit of a twist – a mad science theme for adults. To reinforce this theme, the centerpiece for the party was a muddling bar. To stock it, I had three different kinds of lemonade, carbonated and regular water – and wine and vodka for those who wanted an extra kick. We had a combination of fruits and berries that included blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and pineapple as well as two herbs (basil and mint).

The menu for the night was vegetarian – and was all catered by Goodness Bakeshop. When I asked Catherine to plan the menu, the direction I gave her was that I wanted foods that had unique flavor combinations to again bring in the mad science theme but in a sophisticated way. For appetizers, we started with a delicious cold peach and ginger soup that was served in test tubes and followed it with warm apple and beet tarts. The dinner included a deconstructed ceasar salad, broccoflower soup and white lasagna with a tomato froth. Since it was a birthday and we had kids at the party, we ended the night with mad scientist cupcakes. The fondant hair on the cupcakes, which was created by Edible Details, mimicked the hair on our party hats.

Where did you get the “beakers” for the muddling bar? I’d like to find nice-looking glass ones, but am having a hard time.

This is a great party theme. I’ll use it for a New Year’s Eve party with adults and I’m sure we’ll have a lot of fun. For the beakers, you can find some similarly shaped glasses or modern looking pitchers at Ikea and also the kitchen ware brand Pyrex has very pretty beakers with a green silicon top (matching the party theme above). I purchased some and they look fab (and you can reuse them in the kitchen as measuring tools). The website thinkgeek.com also has some lab glassware made for cocktail parties, very fitting as well.
