DIY {No-Bake} “Pretty-in-a Pinch” Mini Cake

TomBoy Cake inspired by Miette

{DIY Tutorial by HWTM Blog Contributor, Jessica Kirkland of Pen N’ Paperflowers}

If you are looking for the BEST idea ever for a quick, charming cake…you are going to absolutely love me after I share this DIY with you.  For those of you who don’t like to bake…you are going to love me even more.

Remember the Fabulous Find I shared with you last week featuring the Miette baking book? Well it was the adorable “Tomboy” layer cake on the book’s cover that immediately caught my eye and I vowed to make the cake for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. Lucky for me, (yes, I said lucky), I ended up catching a cold two days prior to the party and seriously considered canceling because I had no energy and felt pretty miserable. Desperate to still pull things together, I had to get resourceful.

Normally, I enjoy baking everything from scratch. Considering my circumstances though, I knew there would be very little chance of Ella even having a cake at all if I insisted on going that route. Remembering the other DIY cake I shared with you some time back, I was inspired to head back to the bakery at my local grocery store.  Here’s where the lucky part comes into play.  I discovered I could purchase an un-iced chocolate cake from the bakery. (And it was already pre-sliced into four layers – I only needed three). Are you kidding me?  So I did the unthinkable. For a little over $5 bucks, I purchased the un-iced cake and a tub of pre-made buttercream frosting *gasp* – and was out the door.

What you'll need

KEEP READING for the final results and step-by-step instructions. Trust me when I say…this was easy as pie cake. (more…)

Modern + Whimsical Yellow & White Wedding

Modern Yellow and White Wedding at La Costa Resort

This gorgeous Yellow and White Wedding designed by YourBASH! is full of wonderfully modern, whimsical details like giant glossy white vases & urns surrounding the ceremony area and lemons serving as playful place card holders (for place cards designed by yours truly!). I’m also loving Brian‘s use of bright yellow Moroccan-style lanterns throughout – some were filled with flowers and hung from tall shepherd’s hooks along the ceremony aisle, while others were featured within one of the table centerpiece designs.

This styled shoot took place at the beautiful La Costa Resort & Spa – located in North County San Diego – to help celebrate & showcase their new wedding & event spaces: the Valley Promenade (pictured in the reception photos) and the Legend’s Lawn, which has a panaoramic golf course view! And if you happen to love these vases & urns as much as I do, you can find them at Z Gallerie… right here and here!

Vintage Carnival Birthday Extravaganza

Vintage Carnival Kids Birthday Party

Michelle from I Do Invitations did such a great job with this darling VINTAGE CARNIVAL birthday-on-a-budget theme! Smart decorative elements like stylish paper banners, cute polka dot balloons, and colorful paper daisies make a big impact on the look without breaking the bank…

Some of you moms of little ones might recognize the grocery store “bear full of animal crackers” that has a front row seat at this party…. doesn’t he double nicely as part decor with the simple addition of a ribbon-tied carnival tag?! (You could always paint the lid to match your party’s colors for a different palette too!) In addition to being cute for a kids birthday party, this theme would also work well as a playful baby shower!

FAB Find: Miette {charming pastry recipes}

Miette Book Cover

If you love baking, cookbooks, or even just looking at gorgeous photography of petite pastries, then you will absolutely adore the ridiculously charming baking book, Miette!

And if you are lucky enough to live in San Francisco, then you may have even had the privilege of walking through the doors of one of the four locations of  Miette, dubbed “San Francisco’s most charming pastry shop“.  Miette is the french word for “crumb” (love it even more now?) and as quoted from the Miette website, “aptly describes the scale of our petite pastries and minimal decoration.

Miette cookbook spread

If you are like me and live on the complete opposite side of the country though, then the release of Miette’s baking book is a true gift. Opening the book makes you feel as if you’ve walked into the doors of the dreamy patisserie since the photography includes actual images of the shop itself.

The pages are filled with delicious recipes and equally scrumptious photos of cakes, cookies, macarons, tarts and more that are sure to inspire you to put on your apron. (Or perhaps even prompt you to embark on a frantic search to hunt down the gorgeous wallpaper adorning the walls of the shop…which unfortunately…as I found out…is no longer in print).  This would make a most beautiful addition to your collection of cookbooks as well as a lovely gift for a friend.   (more…)

Parisian Girls Night In + Bridesmaids Movie Viewing Party

Ever dream of taking a trip to Paris?  After browsing this fun & girlie PARISIAN GIRLS NIGHT Party, you may just feel as though you did!  Maureen Anders of Anders Ruff here, thrilled to share the details on one of our most exciting projects…

Universal Studios commissioned Anders Ruff to design a “Girls Night In” Printable Party Decor Setfor the release of the hilarious movie Bridesmaids on DVD at Target. One of our favorite scenes from the movie was the Parisian themed bridal shower. We’d been wanting to design a Parisian themed printable decor set, and this collaboration provided the perfect opportunity!

The sophistication of butterflies, trellis, ruffles and French postal style graphics – paired with humorous elements from the movie – make this party the perfect fit for a fun girls night in or a Bridesmaids viewing party (which would be especially timely right now with THREE of the Bridesmaids actresses being nominated for an Oscar this year!)  The signature elements from the party would also work for a Parisian themed birthday party or wedding shower.

So after hours of designing and styling… voilà! Read on for lots more fun pics & party details… (more…)

Pretty Pink Flower “A Baby Hour” Shower

Pink Flower Baby Shower Dessert Table

When {the very talented} designer Rebecca of Fresh Chick Design Studio thought of how she wanted to celebrate the upcoming arrival of Baby #3, her ideal celebration consisted of “getting her closest gal pals together for a night of no kids, delish food, & a few margaritas (for them)”! And the theme of said get-together?  “A BABY HOUR” … yep, that’s right: part baby shower…part happy hour! Gotta say I kind of LOVE that thinking… and what a fun theme for a sip & see too, right?! ;)

Something tells me that the girls at Fresh Chick knows how to show their guests a good time… not to mention a fabulous atmosphere – just check out these beautiful pics! I’m especially smitten with the fabulous dessert table backdrop… and yes those ARE flowers fashioned from cupcake liners!

Incredible Ombre Surf 1st Birthday Brunch

This stylish OMBRE SURF BIRTHDAY BRUNCH that Ashley of Ashley Rose Photography created for her adorable son Crew is nothing short of incredible! And how smart to feature so many fun food stations that both kids and adults are sure to love – including a cereal bar, a pancake station with all the fixings, and a loaded drink station complete with chocolate milk shots for the kids and mimosas for the adults!

There are so many whimsical, creative details to be found in this darling first birthday party… from the ombre dipped cutlery and hand painted place settings to the large kraft paper photo collage and the shark fin cake pops displayed in trays lined with goldfish. One of my favorite elements has to be the beautifully styled dessert buffet showcasing Crew’s new surfboard and overflowing with incredibly yummy desserts. I also love the stamped muslin bags filled with blue shark gummies (Every surfer’s worst nightmare is much less scary in candy form, right?)! ;)

Also love that the wheels on the mining cars were fashioned from painted wood discs & buttons… such a sweet touch. Sweet & Simple Valentine’s Day DIY (with Cupid’s Arrow Cake)

Cupid's Arrow Cake

Happy belated Valentine’s Day! I’ve been in LA the past couple days getting ready for TODAY’s big “A Star is Born” Operation Shower event, so Valentine’s Day somehow got away from me yesterday with all the last minute details for the event.

I still want to share this adorable DIY guest feature from Abby of Style Me Pretty with you though, because 1) it’s SUPER CUTE, and 2) all of these projects can be tailored to other hearts-and-love-inspired parties too! Think bridal showers, girlie baby showers, and first birthdays.

Read on for full DIY details on all 3 projects, as told by Abby…

Cupid’s Arrow Cake

1. Paint your skewer silver or gold, set aside in a large cup to let dry. You may have to touch up where skewer touches the glass.
2. Using a Large Heart Punch, punch 2 hearts from your glittered card stock or scrapbooking paper.
3. Fold a piece of scrapbook paper or pink paper in half. Cut out a rough, imperfect arrow so that you have 2 separate arrows. Flaws aren’t possible because scrappy = adorable.
4. After your skewer has tried, cut or break it in half.
5. Glue your gold, glitter heart to the tip of your skewer so that each side has glitter on it.
6. Glue your arrows to the other tip.
7. Gently place the arrow adorned skewer down into the top right portion of your cake. Repeat with the glittered heart adorned skewer, placing it upwards into the bottom left portion of your cake.

glittered cupcake topper tutorial

Glittered Heart Cupcake Topper

1. Punch as many hearts as you need to top your cupcake, counting 2 hearts per cake.
2. Adhere two hearts to the lollipop stick so that the glitter is facing outwards.
3. Place into cupcake.

prince and princess diy crown

Prince & Princess Valentine’s Day Crowns

1. Measure your child’s head, then add about 2″ to the total.
2. Cut 4″ wide strips in the desired length from your favorite specialty paper.
3. Wrap the strips to form a circle, then adhere ends using double sided tape, overlapping by 1.5″ or so.
4. Start gussying up your crowns! We use punched out glitter hearts on both of ours, spreading out around by about 1-2″ on one and building up from the center on the other crown. Use your imagination or have your kids design their own!

Darling “Cupid’s Love” Post Office Party

We’re going “postal” over this adorable “Cupid’s Love Post Office” Valentine’s Day party created by Debbie of Wants and Wishes Design. It’s simply LOVE-ly!

The faux post office Debbie created – complete with pink and red awning – is just too cute. Some of my favorite details include the 3D heart shaped cupcake toppers that double as perfect little pockets for love notes and candy, the shot through the heart brownies, and all the postage stamp bag toppers. The hanging polka dot gable box and “Cupids’s Love Mail” postage stamp sign are the perfect addition. There’s just way too much cuteness packed into one party here!

DIY: Paper Pinwheels & Candy Centerpiece

3D Paper Pinwheel Party Centerpiece

I’m excited to share this fun little “Pinwheel Party Trio” project with you today because it’s easy, budget-friendly and super versatile! I themed this centerpiece for Valentine’s Day, but it would work just as well for everything from birthday parties or baby showers to bridal showers and weddings – simply tailor the colors & patterns to whatever your occasion may be…

3D Paper Pinwheel Party Centerpiece

This particular project was also the very first time I tried out my new Cricut Mini, and boy was it nice to not have to hand-cut the paper elements for once! Amazing how much smoother the cut lines came out too. ;) All I had to do to whip up these little pinwheels was load the scrapbook paper into the machine, select the digital 3D Paper Pinwheels cartridge within the Cricut Craftroom, scale them to the sizes I wanted, and press “Cut”.

Because these pinwheels are pretty small in general, the holes for the center (where each section meets) were teensy, so I used inexpensive clear and red diamond diamante pins in lieu of brads and secured them behind the back of the pinwheel with an earring back. You can get diamond diamante pins in packs of 100 for only $2.99 at, and plastic earring backs are super cheap in the jewelry aisle of most craft stores. (more…)

Pink Bridal Shower - Table Designs and Decorations

Jenny from Bloom Designs created this beautiful & cheeky Eat, PINK, and Be Married bridal shower for her sister Nicole… how’s that for a sweet display of sisterly love?!

Inspired by the “girlie girl” style of the guest of honor, Jenny incorporated tons of fit-for-a-princess details into the bridal shower – from the gorgeous desserts display starring a chic pink ombre cake to the pink-sugar-rimmed Kir Royals that greeted guests. And speaking of guests… they all showed up in pink attire and were a lovely addition to the “party decor” (and pictures!) themselves. One of my favorite details, though, has got to be the framed “pink quotes” from other famous girlie girls like Audrey Hepburn, Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) and Shelby from Steel Magnoliasalthough the bride-to-be’s fabulous dress is definitely high on the list too!

Valentine's Day Dessert Recipe - Creme Brulee

Today we’re getting ready for Cupid’s holiday with a luscious Valentine’s Day dessert that will melt your heart!  Carrie Sellman here from Half Baked – excited to share my very first post as a new guest contributor!

Crème Brulee is one of those decadent desserts definitely worthy of a special occasion. Most think it’s an indulgence only to be enjoyed at a fine restaurant, but it’s actually fairly simple to make at home. It only has 4 ingredients!

Topped with a caramelized sugar heart, these mini crème brulees would have cupid himself swooning.  As your spoon cracks through the delicate sugar crust to reveal the silky smooth cream beneath, this is one heart you won’t mind breaking this Valentine’s Day.
