Lovely & Modern “Curious George” Birthday

Curious George Birthday Party

You’re going to GO BANANAS over this adorable Curious George Birthday Party hosted by Elizabeth of Party In Style by elle! The gorgeous red and yellow color palette set a cheerful tone for her daughter’s second birthday party while creating a display of eye candy yummy enough for any adult to “ooh! ooh! and ahh! ahh!” over. *wink*

I love how Elizabeth was able to tie in some special party elements from a recent visit with family in Puerto Rico, including some traditional syrop de piragua for the snow cone machine.  Her background in fashion design is apparent throughout the party details and seamless integration of fabric, texture and pattern. Don’t be fooled by all of the monkey business going on in this 2nd birthday party either… the color combo and creative details pictured here would be lovely for a fun wedding shower or baby shower too!

DIY Decor Tutorial: Faux Table Lamps

Faux Table Lamp Centerpiece

Here’s an easy tutorial for faux “Table Lamps” that can be used as themed table centerpieces or accent party decor. They’re made from pillar candle stick holders + lamp shades that can be embellished to your liking… so no messy cords or outlets required! If you want to actually make them “light up”, you can use battery operated LED lights, although it will be a subtle sort of lighting compared to their electric counterparts.

The “lamp” shown in this tutorial is from the Goodnight Moon Baby Shower (pictured here and here) and was inspired by the same blue and yellow bedside lamp pictured in the book. I also used this same concept a couple years ago though – to make extra tall “lamps” for a hotel inspired holiday party… so you can really tailor this idea to all sorts of themes! And now on to the tutorial…

“Goodnight Moon” Baby Shower {Part 1: Tabletop & Decor + Printables}

Goodnight Moon Inspired Baby Shower

When I was asked to create a new baby shower theme inspired by the popular children’s book Goodnight Moon, I was pretty much “over the moon” myself! This theme was so much fun to work with because the book happens to be packed with tons of inspirational elements to build from – from the adorable pajama-clad bunny himself to other key “characters” like the cow jumping over the moon, the 3 little bears, and the lone red balloon.

I was also excited to have a great excuse to revisit the Bedtime Story baby shower theme from years ago. It was definitely time for version 2.0! As with that original theme, standard 6-ft banquet tables were first transformed into “beds” here, using inexpensive bed linens & pillows.  The rest of the theme was brought to life life utilizing key characters/elements from the book, playful patterns, vibrant colors, and Glue Dots galore!

Goodnight Moon Inspired Baby Shower

We have 2 tablescapes to share, plus a dessert table, themed drink ideas, 2 DIY projects, and a decorated hutch (which usually houses our barware & china!). I REALLY hope you’re able to utilize some of these ideas for your own celebrations! There are TONS of images to share, so in an effort to keep this post from being a mile long, here we go with Part 1: Tabletop & Decor.

{Recipe} “Super Natural” Bran Muffins with Maple Syrup & Dates

All Natural Bran Muffin Recipe

Okay… so I’m definitely not the world’s healthiest eater… by a long shot. The combination of a hectic schedule and a serious sweet tooth has resulted in a diet that’s heavy skewed towards whatever is super fast & convenient, which almost always does NOT = “wholesome”.

A drastic overnight change is just not going to happen though, and truth be told I really don’t have a desire (or discipline) to start eating just like Madonna or Demi anyways. Instead, I’ve just started to try incorporating more natural products, ingredients, & recipes into the mix to help balance things out – easy changes like opting for raw cane sugar and all-natural coffee creamer. One of my first steps was the recent purchase of the cookbook Super Natural Every Day by Heidi Swanson of 101 cookbooks fame. There are zillions of “natural” cookbooks out there, but I chose this particular one partially because I love to support other bloggers and partially because I knew it promised to delivery gorgeous, mouth-watering food photography, just like Heidi’s blog.

All Natural Bran Muffin Recipe

So today I’m going to share one of my favorite breakfast recipes from this cookbook with you – which still happens to fall into both the sweet and convenient “grab and go” categories – while utilizing all-natural ingredients like raw cane sugar, pure maple syrup, whole wheat flour, and unprocessed oat bran. (I also added chopped dried dates as the mix-in.) (more…)

5 Year BLOGiversary Celebration + The Post That Almost Didn’t Happen

HWTM 5 Year Blogiversary

So… I should start off by saying that this post really should’ve been up back in June – on June 26, 2011 to be exact – but the fact that it’s up at all is kind of a mini miracle at this point (full story below). And, as it turns out, the more-than-2-months-late post date is actually kind of perfect…

…because now that it’s finally up & done, I’ve come to realize that this post – which so innocently started out as what was supposed to be a mini “virtual celebration” of the 5-year anniversary of this blog, has instead unwittingly become the perfect metaphor for my last 5 years of blogging: filled with shiny moments, not-so-shiny moments, full blown fall-on-your-face crashes, and multiple restarts… to use computer terminology. And despite the obstacles this project presented, I couldn’t help but laugh when I realized that…and might even venture to say there’s something I kind of love about it (hello there, silver lining).

Here’s the full story, plus a super inspiring video just because I think you’ll really love it too…

Lulu’s Cowgirl Chic Birthday Party

Invitation, Milk and Farm Fresh Items

Yee-haw parters! Ya’ll ready to see a darling Cowgirl Chic Birthday Party by Jill of Peas & Thank You’s? Saddle on up and ride on over for this adorable birthday bash… it’s creative, colorful, and bound to bring out your inner cowgirl/cowboy!

I’m totally obsessed with the amazing “Lulu” rope backdrop sign. Not only was it hand braided by the hostess herself, it sets the tone of the party perfectly, even making the garage doors part of the party decor. Brilliant! When you have a large space, making it work for you is key and Jill nailed it! And don’t even get me started on the ridiculously cute hen cake balls… I had no idea they were even cake balls until I read the description!

Main Table Cowgirl Party

Other touches that I just can’t get enough of: gourmet “Dirty”Apples {caramel & sprinkles}, hinged milk bottles with regular and strawberry milk, fabulous ruffled table skirt, and all the amazing food. Every time I see a pink ruffle cake, my heart skips a beat! The touch of pink used here makes this western party just girly enough, but not overdone. To think all of this started from a pink pair of cowboy boots!

Chewy Blueberry-Oatmeal Cookies {Recipe}

Oatmeal Blueberry Cookie Recipe

I made these Blueberry Oatmeal Cookies over the weekend and have probably already eaten half the batch, which I felt guilty about until a sweet Twitter follower reminded me that both blueberries AND oatmeal are good for your heart. Score! Yes… I know that doesn’t exactly make these fall into the “health food” category, but it’s gotta be more innocent than the chocolate chip version we usually make around here, right? =)

And getting back to the taste buds… these really ARE yummy! They have all the sweetness of oatmeal cookies with a refreshing hint of blueberry muffin goodness. I baked some of them for about 12 mins and they came out a little undercooked (not complaining at all about that though!) – and others for about 15 mins and they were more cake-y… so you can bake them to be what you like.

And now… onto the pictorial & recipe, starting with what you need:

Wonderlandia Table #5: Baby Gender Reveal

Baby Gender Reveal Baby Shower - Wonderlandia

When I asked Jesi of Jesi Haack Design to create a Wonderlandia themed table tailored to a BABY SHOWER {for the Glue Dots Tablescape Exhibit} at our launch party, I had no idea she was also going to incorporate the Gender Reveal aspect but am so happy that she did!

Gender reveal partieswhether an intimate dinner with family or a full-on baby shower – seem to be a growing trend lately, and I have to agree that it’s very fun/exciting to be able to actually witness the facial expressions of the parents-to-be when they first discover if it’s a little boy or a little girl that will be joining their family and process that for the first time… truly an amazing thing!

Baby Gender Reveal Baby Shower - Wonderlandia

Another thing I wasn’t aware of when approaching Jesi about this table… she’s actually pregnant herself! And in order to bring her table to life she enlisted the help of floral designer Carissa from JL Designs and pastry chef Melody of Sweet and Saucy Shop, who BOTH happen to be expecting as well… so what you see here is a baby shower theme dreamed up by preggo ladies… now there’s fun twist! (And CONGRATS to all three!} Add in some wonderfully playful & modern stationery elements by Posh Paperie, and this all adds up to one amazing looking party. And in case you’re curious about the outcome in this particular instance… It’s a GIRL! =)

Wonderlandia Table #4: “Confetti & Rabbits” Inspired Bridal Shower

Wonderlandia Bridal Shower - Confetti and Rabbits

Vicky from A Subtle Revelry put such a playful and super creative spin on “Wonderlandia” for her interpretation of the theme with this fabulous “Confetti and Rabbits” Bridal Shower tablescape {for our Glue Dots Tablescape Exhibit}! She had me from the get-go with those little ultra-modern rabbit silhouettes, but the way she displayed them between wooden blocks and “looking glass” plates was simply INSPIRED!

And how fabulous do the homemade cakes look adorned with wired confetti “cake toppers”? Those are actually Christmas tree garland pick decorations repurposed as cake decorations – GENIUS! The polka dot “Bingo” linen from La Tavola really played up the “confetti” element in this design, which was also brought to life through colorful paper circles, mini DIY honeycombs, and stacks of cookies sprinkled with bright pink sugar. Another fun touch: a giant orange balloon attached to a beaded crystal “string” adorned the guest of honor’s chair!

Wonderlandia Table #3: Pink & Orange, Tea-Inspired Wedding Theme

Pink Orange Wonderlandia Wedding, Tea Party

As a huge fan of Heather Ham‘s work and vintage-meets-modern style, it’s no surprise that the Wonderlandia table design she created {for our Glue Dots Tablescape Exhibit} was nothing short of stunning! Heather’s table was tailored to a Wedding celebration and featured tons of gorgeous flowers blossoming from all-white tea pots and candlestick holders, which provided a nice contrast to the arrangements and really made the colors POP!

I’m also loving the contrast between the rich, vibrant colors of the flowers and the more subdued hues of the table linens and paper details… you might say it’s a “perfect marraige”! *wink* – couldn’t resist! Bottles of Sparkling Grapefruit IZZE sat atop “Drink Me” tags in an ode to the Wonderland theme, bands of satin ribbon were used to dress up the napkins, and contemporary patterns adorned the invitations and stationery.
