TRASHing the Birthday Party {in STYLE!}

Trash Inspired Birthday Party

There’s creative people, and then there’s Annika of Cakes Like a Party – who threw this incredibly unique “TRASHY” 2nd Birthday Party for her son {who happens to be “obsessed” with trash & trash trucks!}. I’m a huge fan of thinking outside the box when it comes to party themes, but Annika took that box and used it as decoration! From the trashy garland and garbage picker-uppers (which she turned into a kids game… simply brilliant!), to the dirt cupcake table and matching waste management attire, Annika seriously nailed this theme.

I’m loving that this party was not only incredible, but eco-friendly too. What a great way to “recycle” all of your recyclables by using them as birthday decor. {GENIUS!} In addition to the trashy garland, more fun details include things like JUNK food, a “Don’t Get Trashed” sign on the drink station, and a birthday invitation what was mailed out in brown paper bags along with the opener: “We’re talking trash… for Brooks’ 2nd birthday.” I love how this party was not only creative, but humorous too!

Little Blue Car Birthday {BEEP! BEEP!}

Little Blue Car First Birthday Party

Christi from P is for Party and Kelly from WH Hostess teamed up to create this modern + adorable LITTLE BLUE CAR themed first birthday party… which looks pretty darn fantastic brightened up with all the splashes of vibrant ORANGE! First birthday parties are often filled with even more adults than kids, as was the case here, and Christi & Kelly did such a great job keeping the look stylish & adult-friendly, yet also playful enough for a first birthday party (and adults love cake pops and brownie bites too!!).

Fabulous patterns are always one of the first things to catch my eye, and I couldn’t help but be immediately drawn to the AMAZING {& handmade} backdrop on the dessert table, which was crafted from all the different papers used throughout the party + wide satin ribbon. LOVE! Also smitten with the creative lemonade bottle favors, peach bellini station, and of course the fabulous 2-tier cake complete with a blue fondant car topper!

Elephants & Alphabets Baby Shower

Elephants and Alphabets Baby Shower

I’m a huge fan of the playful, modern style of Rebecca from Fresh Chick Design Studio… and here’s a wonderful example of that signature style in action!

This adorable Elephants & Alphabets baby shower that she recently designed for a friend dons a stylish citrus & pewter color palette, lots of contemporary graphics, darling themed treats, and 2 fabulous food tables adorned with suspended parasols and giant tissue poms hanging overhead! And by incorporating elements with a slightly more vintage feel – such as floral fabrics, bakers twine, and mason jars – Rebecca adds a sweet, charming touch to the mix of modern silhouettes and bold colors.

Anyways, I had planned to share this guest DIY project from floral expert Kim Foren with you a little earlier in the week because it would make a lovely DIY gift/project for Mom’s Day tomorrow, but things got a little hectic this week with traveling & prepping for the Today Show segment yesterday so a few posts got pushed back.  This really is a pretty home project you could do anytime though! Kentucky Derby Party – Poster Printables

Kentucky Derby Party Games

Hello to everyone from {a very sunny} NYC! I just finished up my first appearance on the Today Show (something that’s honestly been a dream for years – hooray!!)… and wanted to share a couple free downloads from the segment.

The theme was Kentucky Derby Party ideas, and since the show was running a little late we only about 3-1/2 minutes to work with so we skipped over a few things, but I was so happy that Kathie Lee & Hoda made a point to get to the game because this is an easy way to add a fun element to your party… and best of all it’s PERSONALIZED! {FLASHBACK!} High School Inspired Party

When Apartment Guide designed a challenge to “create an entertainment area or tablescape and throw a party in that space, within the next 10 days,” Caley of How Does She set out to time travel back to the days of HIGH SCHOOL! With cafeteria trays as her inspiration, Caley created a FLASHBACK menu full of tater tots, square pizza (remember those days?), milk cartons, pudding, and lots of other cafeteria eats! High school photos of the guests were combined to create a photo garland hung around the room. My favorite part? Guests arrived dressed up as their favorite High School Stereotype!

A Vintage+Modern Engagement Party

Vintage Mod Black & White Engagement Party

Loving the sweet simplicity and creative touches in this vintage-mod engagement party, which was designed by Shannon Leahy and hosted in a San Francisco, CA loft.

The graphic designer in me adores the cool typographic poster hanging on the wall, which coordinates with the “When did you meet Caroline & Dixon?” guest activity… but the kitschy collection of borrowed cake toppers is such a fun idea too. They look especially great atop the stacked “oreo cookie cakes”! (I seriously want to pull one of those Oreos right through the screen right now too… lunchtime is calling!)

Colorful & Creative “Race Car” Birthday Party

Amazing Cake

{posted by HWTM contributor Jessica Wilcox}
Being a Mommy of three boys, I love to see creative and colorful birthday parties for BOYS. This incredibly inspiring Race Car second birthday party sent in by Gwynn of Gwynn Wasson Designs gets my creative wheels turning, so to speak! From the super fun “race car” themed activities to the delicious red & yellow dessert table Gwynn thought of everything…this party takes the checkered flag!!

No birthday party is complete without an amazing cake (or cupcakes, which happen to be my personal favorite), and this party is no exception. Gwynn did a wonderful job adding creative touches throughout such as the race car speedway and the blow-up race car filled with cushy pillows. I’m also loving the super fun bubble tins and crayon caddie party favors that the kids can enjoy after the party is over! What little boy wouldn’t love this fun birthday party?!

Charming Farmhouse Brunch Baby Shower

Farmhouse Brunch Baby Shower

There’s something so warm and inviting about this darling FARMHOUSE BRUNCH Baby Shower styled by Trish from Frilly Milly Events! And with a menu offering up creative treats like tiny cups of syrup topped with french toast triangles, maple bacon skewers, donut hole “trees”, heath bar coffee cake, and more – better add “mouth watering” to the list of party adjectives too!

I actually don’t think there’s a more fitting way to describe this lovely celebration than in Trish’s own words: “…a “farmhouse brunch” full of the goodness of a hearty brunch like your grandmother would make, but with the dainty-ness that honors the birth of a tiny baby girl.”

A {Sweet & Citrusy} Vintage Game Party

Vintage Game Night Party

It’s always so fun to see outside-the-box themes, like this clever VINTAGE GAME inspired party sent in by Kelly Moore! She did such a great job bringing the theme to life in a very stylish, budget-friendly way by focusing on clever DIY details like signs made from wood & chalkboard paint and a banner and “vase filler” made from vintage book paper.

Pops of bright orange and yellow were brought into the party through elements like Mimosas, personalized flag drink stirrers, oranges, billy balls, old fashioned lemon drops, and some truly fabulous Amy Butler fabric. Kelly even added a bit of the party’s flair to her own outfit by adorning her orange ballet flats with pom poms made from more of the vintage book paper!

Sweet Fairtyale Princess Birthday Party

Fairytale Princess Birthday Party

Everyone seems to be smitten with the Royal Wedding these days, but when it comes to moms and their daughters, there are actually “royal princesses” running around all the time! And speaking of that, I’m seriously just head over heels for this sweet Royal Princess themed party (designed by Nicole, the birthday girl’s mom, and photographed by Diana Elizabeth)… for more than one reason.

FIRST, there’s the obvious: it’s ridiculously adorable and definitely looks like a fairytale! Let’s start with the dreamy cupcake toppers, shall we: frog prince, castle, glass slipper, storybook, princess wand… all the key players! And then of course there’s the fabulous graphics, the special storytime setting, the “Royal Ball” (pink bouncy balls), and much more.

Fairytale Princess Birthday Party

NEXT, there’s the special meaning behind this party… which has a something to do with why mom really went all out for this party. If you have a few extra minutes, please take the time to read through the reason (which is at the bottom of this post), and is explained by Charlotte’s mom.

This garden themed birthday party from Jordan at Polkadot Prints is just WAY too cute… not to mention filled with tons of creative & budget-friendly details! I love the way she dressed up the milk bottles by adding her own “lids” made from patterned paper and jute string, and how the table is covered with fake grass for an decidedly outdoorsy vibe…. so clever!

The theme is carried out so well in the food here… from “worms in dirt” {gummy worms buried in cookie crumbs} to cake served in flower pots to adorable toadstool cookies & more. And see those adorable ladybugs climbing the wall? There’s a DIY on those coming soon!

“Cowboy Cookie Corral” Birthday Party

Cowboy Corral

Yee-Haw partner. . .saddle up and ride on down to check out the incredible Fourth Birthday Party put on by the one-women show Julie Cox of A Reason To Get Together! Julie was the brains and beauty behind this entire birthday party. From fruit skewers and s’mores pops to saw-horse horses and a hay-bale corner complete with western photo props, she did it all!

I’m especially obsessed with the clever, budget-friendly centerpieces, which Julie created by placing tall grass (which she cut from across the street) into tin cans tied with rope. Super easy, but this made a HUGE statement! It just goes to show you that GREAT party decor doesn’t always have to be expensive. I’m also loving that there were activities and party favors for the kids AND adults alike! Makes going to a kids birthday party all the more fun when adults can participate too.

Fresh Carrots, Easter Baskets, & Pysanky Eggs

Easter Party - Pickwick House

This Easter party/workshop sent in by Sharon of Sharon Taylor Designs looks like such a fun event! Party + creativitywhat’s not to love, right?! The workshop was held at Pickwick House {based in Springfield, Missouri} and featured Easter themed tutorials by Sharon and guest artist Katie Kring.

Some of my favorite aesthetic details include the fabulous use of fresh carrots to adorn the chiavari chairs and crystal chandelier, and the way the pre-sketched eggs {which would be later utilized in Katie’s tutorial} were displayed at each guests’s place setting on beautiful oversize silk bows.
