{Salty & Sweet} Stella & Dot Dessert Table

Stella and Dot Jewelry Party

I know there are lots of Stella and Dot fans and jewelry party hostesses out there – so I’m excited to share this creative & budget-friendly Stella and Dot inspired dessert table with you!

Nazra from Make It, Bake It, Create It and her friend Jenny did a great job drawing inspiration from the colors and “dot” element from Stella and Dot, and incorporating a gorgeous color-coordinating necklace to really bring their dessert table to life. For the edible element of the table, they went with the “Salty and Sweet” theme and offered up {mostly homemade} treats like chocolate dipped Pringles and salted caramels… YUM!  I also ADORE the hanging fabric flower balls… such a great, reusable decor idea!

{Recipe} The Best Frosted Sugar Cookies*

Frosted Sugar Cookie Recipe

When I was in the 4th grade, my class put together a cookbook as a fundraiser. Everyone submitted recipes from their friends and family, and the illustrations for the chapter dividers and front/back covers were all done by the members of my class… so of course it was a true work of art *wink*… at least to our mothers!

One thing that is arguably a work of art in the kitchen though… the sugar cookie recipe that I first discovered in that book! I honestly can’t remember who originally submitted it and it seems that what I’d thought was a “beloved” cookbook was somehow a casualty of one of our moves growing up (hmmm…), but I started making these little gems regularly around the 6th grade for school functions, friends’ birthdays, holidays, etc… and it kind of became one of my “things”. MANY years later… I can’t tell you how many of my jr. high and high school friends still come out of the woodwork on facebook around the holidays or their kids’ birthdays and ask for “the sugar cookie recipe“. “THE” is all the description that I need to know what they’re talking about. =)

Frosted Sugar Cookie Recipe

I think it’s finally time to post about these – so that instead of countless emails the recipe will be easily accessible in one spot. It’s really a “back to basics” recipe… eggs, sugar, flour, BUTTER… but the secrets to making them great are the cook time (you almost want them undercooked so they’re super soft), and GENEROUS amounts of frosting. No skimping with this one! (more…)

Macy’s {Colorful} Birthday Parade – Part 2

Macy's First Birthday Parade - Birthday Party

So……I blogged the first part of my daughter’s first birthday party a few weeks ago and had every intention of posting the rest a few days later, and then life {and work} just kept getting in the way! I’ve come to realize that I’m going to have to blog this in pieces in order to get the rest of the party up since there are a gazillion+1  photos to go through and I still have yet to find that elusive time-freezing mechanism. =)

So without further delay, here’s Part 2 of Macy’s Colorful Birthday Parade: The KIDS TABLE and FAVOR TABLE. I went a little nuts with the labels and signage in general at her party (because that’s the part I love working on the most!)… and they’re all available on Hostess Ink! Summer BBQ Theme + Free Party Printables

Summer BBQ party ideas

Looking for a creative way to celebrate Memorial Day… or another outdoor summer get-together? Good! Because we have a new Summer BBQ theme for you today, complete with ideas for a Make-it-Yourself hot dog station (which keeps things easy on the host!), creative & affordable food presentation ideas, and free BBQ themed printables…(scroll down for download links).

This theme is super easy to pull togetherpromise! Aside from the shopping, which we did most of the day before, this entire theme was put together & shot in a single day – including the design of the printables!

Summer BBQ party ideas

One of my favorite elements from this shoot was a $7 plastic picnic tablecloth that I picked up in the camping aisle at Target. We used this one tablecloth to embellish everything (from vases to soda bottles to the drinks tub) and still had so much left over!

I also loved using corn chips as filler for the corn-on-the-cob sticks and Hot Dog Sign display… probably because the method for putting these together seemed to be one handful of chips for the vase, one handful for my mouth, one handful for the vase, one handful for my mouth… you get the picture. =) (more…)

TRASHing the Birthday Party {in STYLE!}

Trash Inspired Birthday Party

There’s creative people, and then there’s Annika of Cakes Like a Party – who threw this incredibly unique “TRASHY” 2nd Birthday Party for her son {who happens to be “obsessed” with trash & trash trucks!}. I’m a huge fan of thinking outside the box when it comes to party themes, but Annika took that box and used it as decoration! From the trashy garland and garbage picker-uppers (which she turned into a kids game… simply brilliant!), to the dirt cupcake table and matching waste management attire, Annika seriously nailed this theme.

I’m loving that this party was not only incredible, but eco-friendly too. What a great way to “recycle” all of your recyclables by using them as birthday decor. {GENIUS!} In addition to the trashy garland, more fun details include things like JUNK food, a “Don’t Get Trashed” sign on the drink station, and a birthday invitation what was mailed out in brown paper bags along with the opener: “We’re talking trash… for Brooks’ 2nd birthday.” I love how this party was not only creative, but humorous too!

Little Blue Car Birthday {BEEP! BEEP!}

Little Blue Car First Birthday Party

Christi from P is for Party and Kelly from WH Hostess teamed up to create this modern + adorable LITTLE BLUE CAR themed first birthday party… which looks pretty darn fantastic brightened up with all the splashes of vibrant ORANGE! First birthday parties are often filled with even more adults than kids, as was the case here, and Christi & Kelly did such a great job keeping the look stylish & adult-friendly, yet also playful enough for a first birthday party (and adults love cake pops and brownie bites too!!).

Fabulous patterns are always one of the first things to catch my eye, and I couldn’t help but be immediately drawn to the AMAZING {& handmade} backdrop on the dessert table, which was crafted from all the different papers used throughout the party + wide satin ribbon. LOVE! Also smitten with the creative lemonade bottle favors, peach bellini station, and of course the fabulous 2-tier cake complete with a blue fondant car topper!

A Vintage+Modern Engagement Party

Vintage Mod Black & White Engagement Party

Loving the sweet simplicity and creative touches in this vintage-mod engagement party, which was designed by Shannon Leahy and hosted in a San Francisco, CA loft.

The graphic designer in me adores the cool typographic poster hanging on the wall, which coordinates with the “When did you meet Caroline & Dixon?” guest activity… but the kitschy collection of borrowed cake toppers is such a fun idea too. They look especially great atop the stacked “oreo cookie cakes“! (I seriously want to pull one of those Oreos right through the screen right now too… lunchtime is calling!)

Colorful & Creative “Race Car” Birthday Party

Amazing Cake

{posted by HWTM contributor Jessica Wilcox}
Being a Mommy of three boys, I love to see creative and colorful birthday parties for BOYS. This incredibly inspiring Race Car second birthday party sent in by Gwynn of Gwynn Wasson Designs gets my creative wheels turning, so to speak! From the super fun “race car” themed activities to the delicious red & yellow dessert table Gwynn thought of everything…this party takes the checkered flag!!

No birthday party is complete without an amazing cake (or cupcakes, which happen to be my personal favorite), and this party is no exception. Gwynn did a wonderful job adding creative touches throughout such as the race car speedway and the blow-up race car filled with cushy pillows. I’m also loving the super fun bubble tins and crayon caddie party favors that the kids can enjoy after the party is over! What little boy wouldn’t love this fun birthday party?!
