Vintage-Style “Red Scooter” Birthday Party

Vintage Style Red Scooter Birthday Party

I’m seriously OBSESSED with this adorable, vintage-style Scooter Birthday Party that Laurie of Gallamore West created for her son’s fourth birthday. Every single detail just makes my heart skip a beat!

The details of this party were perfectly designed, from the mini fabric buntings used throughout, to the distressed “Jake” letters adorning the mantel and the simply stylish berry baskets, to the incredibly creative “Sugar Cookie Speed Bumps” and the Scooter Decorating Station. I just can’t get enough of this charming little party. One of my favorite details is the “Build your own Scooter,” that the kids created from cookies and pretzels, A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

PARTY DETAILS, as told by Laurie

“Our son, Jake, loves to ride his little Radio Flyer Scooter.  So when it was time to plan his 4th birthday, I was so excited to use his scooter as my inspiration for his party!  Jake’s scooter is red, and I adore the color combination of red/blue so I made the invitations and all the printables in those colors using Microsoft Word. Because Jake’s party was right before Easter, I tried to limit the amount of sugar I was serving…

ON THE MENU
For food we had Turkey and Cheese Scooter Wheels {Turkey/Swiss pinwheels}, Peanut Butter and Jelly Scooter Wheels {PB&J Uncrustables}, Fuel Up on Fruit {fruit salad}, Handlebars {cups with carrots and celery with ranch}, Sweet wheels {cookies}, and chips w/salsa.

DRINKS
For drinks we had lemonade, water bottles with labels I made, and 100% juice boxes.  I loved the way the red cups looked with the blue striped paper straws!

DARLING DESSERT TABLE
For dessert, Jake wanted a plain vanilla cake with plain vanilla frosting.  I used Martha Stewart’s vanilla cupcake recipe and made it into a 3-layer cake, topped with my own buttercream recipe.  We also had red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting {also a Martha Stewart recipe}, sweet wheels {powdered mini donuts}, and sugar cookie speed bumps. I found the red suitcases with blue trim and the mini vintage scooter decoration on Amazon- it was part of a dollhouse collection, but it looked perfect on Jake’s cake!  Our boys already had The Dangerous Book for Boys and I liked the way it looked mixed with the decorations so I incorporated it under the cake stand.

PARTY DECOR
For decorations, I made a burlap wreath for the front door that welcomed guests with a mini pennant “welcome” banner and a printable sign leading our friends to the backyard. On the tables, I used red sheets as tablecloths.  For centerpieces, I used wooden crates topped with wooden berry baskets full of fresh berries and a free printable mini-pennant flag banner from, All Sorts.  We had cake and presents inside our house… Our mantel was looking pretty bare {because we’re in the process of moving!} so I framed pictures of Jake riding his scooter to hang above the mantel.  I decorated the mantel with vintage Coca-Cola bottles along with other glass bottles, along with kraft letters I painted that spelled his name.  I also hung handmade felt/twine garland and pom-pom ribbon from the mantel.

ACTIVITIES
We had three main activities at the party:
The first activity was “Pin the Wheel on the Scooter.” I painted a scooter on a big piece of cardboard and glued ribbon around it to hide the torn edges.

The second activity was “Make your own sweet scooter” using mini Oreos, Vienna Fingers, mini pretzel rods, mini pretzel sticks, and royal icing as the glue.

The third activity was a “Birthday Parade.” We live in a community with great walking trails.  Jake loves to go on scooter rides around the lake so on the invitations I had asked all the kids to “Bring your wheels for a birthday parade around the lake.”  The kids all decorated their scooters, bikes and wagons with red balloons and streamers and we took them on a scooter/bike/wagon ride around the lake.  Jake loved having all of his friends go on a ride with him and they even saw a mama duck with her baby ducklings in the lake! The kids also loved just playing in the sandbox and sharing each other’s scooters and bikes and riding around the backyard!

PARTY FAVORS
For favors I decided to skip the traditional party bags since I couldn’t think of any scooter themed favors.  Instead we gave a jar of “Jake’s Scooter-rific Cookie Mix” to each family and used the money that we would’ve spent on party favor bags to make a donation to Save the Children to help the children of Japan. After the party my husband and I decided that we liked doing that so much that we are going to let our boys choose a charity each year that we’ll make a donation to in leu of party favor bags.  Horray for a new tradition!
