Creative Challenge: “HANGOVER” Party Ideas

Hi Everyone!
If you’re a repeat visitor to HWTM, you might have seen this post from a while back that explains the rather unconventional theme for our 10-year wedding anniversary – which somehow is less than 2 weeks away!

Over the course of planning, I’m running into the issue of not being able to find any really cool tiger themed desserts – cookies/cakes/cupcakes, etc to purchase. Lots of zebra & giraffe prints, but a shortage of tiger print… especially ones geared towards adults. My initial instinct was to go with the tiger theme in reference to Mike Tyson’s “pet” in the moviebut really we’re open to ANYTHING Hangover-inspired!

So… I’m thinking it’s time to reach out to all the talent out there and see if anyone is up to the challenge of creating a Hangover-inspired desserts and cakes – or even party favors & decor ideas! – especially since bakeries & etsy shop owners might actually be able to sell them to other people looking to do this theme, which could also work for birthdays, themed new year’s eve parties, an adventurous couple’s wedding shower or co-ed bachelor/bachelorette, etc.

I’ve included some of the elements we’re using for inspiration above (food labels, signage, decor, screen savers from the movie site, etc) in case it helps get the wheels turning. The key players are: tiger, chicken, casino chips, satchel (i.e. “man purse”), missing tooth, and hospital ID bracelet, which I’ll be personalizing for each of our guests! =)

With the fact that Hangover 2 is already in production, there’s a good chance this will be a popular party theme for years to come! If you’re interested, please send photos of your ideas to submissions {at} hwtm.com with HANGOVER in the subject line by next Wednesday, November 10th.  We’ll compile a gallery of the best ideas and feature them on HWTM, including credits and link backs to websites/blogs/etsy shops.

If you’re able to send photos of you ideas earlier than Wednesday (the sooner the better!), we might even be able to utilize them at our party next weekend, but either way at least there will be plenty of inspiration for others looking to host this theme in the future!

As a side note regarding the actual trip:
MANY of you mentioned on both the original post and Facebook that you’re planning to do a similar trip for your own milestone celebration (I’ve heard lots of 30th and 40th birthdays particularly!) – so I wanted to mention that we booked all of our rooms at Caesars Palace (in staying in theme with the movie) through Harrah’s Total Experiences – which is a group planning service that helps you customize your trips. Caesar’s is a Harrah’s property, so that’s the connection here. Since it’s a group trip, we were able to get a special room block rate for all of our friends… AND on the “Rainman Suite” where the actual party will be held… which also happens to be dubbed “The Suite that Inspired the Hangover“! Yay!! =)

You can do personalized chocolate casino chips and chocolate playing cards. I have included some links I found online below.

your cake maybe you can do a 3 layer cake.. 1 layer a regular white wedding cake look.. 1 layer a tiger print theme and 1 layer a vegas theme.. maybe the top layer so u can top it with fun hangover inspired toppers.. maybe baby carlos or elvis groom the missing tooth

another idea is an inspiration from a post I saw on here.. I believe it was the something blue bridal shower.. they had a photo booth inspired by props. I believe they had a white sheet backdrop and took photos using blue props.. you could use 1 corner of the room for this. You can have baby carlos in a carrier. you could have a stuffed tiger, aviator glasses, maybe a life size cut out of naked mr chow (sp) for people to pose with.. or with head cut off with people to pose behind.. you could put a mattress in background. (maybe get a cot mattress from hotel) maybe get cheesy hats from a wedding chapel that says just married. antique toy blue car..

you can create a scrapbook.. embellish the pages with vegas stickers, wedding stickers, tiger print paper (you can make it look elegant or cheesy aka vegas).. have all the guests write their fav memory of the couple. you can fill the scrapbook with the pics from photobooth later as a keepsake.

you can also give each guest or just a few depending on budget and # of guests a disposable camera to carry around and snap random fun shots…
to recreate the digital camera at the end of the movie that had all the pics of night they couldn’t remember (hopefully this will be a night u will never forget)

A. My favorite cupcake shop in Seattle made a Zebra-striped cupcake display for a Betsey Johnson party- can easily dye the frosting orange:

B. They also make “Tiger Tail” cupcakes modeled after the Hostess treat- coconut cupcakes with raspberry buttercream, sugared shredded coconut, and raspberry glaze zigzagged across. So good!

Do you have the file number for the poker chip? I can’t find them anywhere. :) What program do you use for your invites and save the dates?

On the subject of new & creative ways to celebrate (as is your Hangover Anniversary celebration), I was wondering if you’ve ever posted about a 30th birthday party for a woman? I am beginning to plan a surprise 30th bday party for my friend using a “13 going on 30” theme somehow, focusing on a green and pink polka dot decor, and desperately need ideas. I am a big fan of your site and would be so excited to see what you could come up with.

If you’re still wanting to go the tiger route for desserts here’s an idea. Make a zebra cake (http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/zebra-cake-recipe) but dye the vanilla part of the cake orange. Tiger stripes instead of zebra! You could decorate the outside any way you like. Maybe incorporate other elements from the movie, as others have suggested, and once you cut the cake… SURPRISE!… there’s the tiger element.

I’m in love with this idea for my husband’s 30th birthday we are doing in Vegas. Where did you create this fabulous online invitation?

PS Etsy has cupcake toppers made of sugar fondant you can have made with anything on them…even aviators and teeth!

Hi Cara –

We did the party last weekend and it was sooo much fun – you guys will have a blast with this theme for your husband’s birthday! More pictures & DIY details or are party are coming in December ;) If you want to stay at Caesar’s Palace I’d recommend trying to get a group deal through Total Experiences (as mentioned above). We got a way better rate than their regular rates since there were multiple rooms booked.

I made the invitations myself in photoshop (my background is in graphic design) – and I found the images of the wolf, tiger, and chicken on istockphoto.com.

P.S. Thanks for the tip on the fondant toppers!

This is fantastic! I think I’m going to use this to inspire my husbands 36th surprise party. I was wondering where you got the font for the simple glowing text, or how you achieve the look. Once you created the invite where did you have it printed?

Again, this idea is great. Congrats for 10 years of marriage!
