All you need for the packaging is:
1. small kraft boxes OR cellophane bags
2. pretty ribbon OR raffia

Holiday Party: Chocolate + Peppermint Treats

When it comes winter holidays, there’s just something about rich, yummy chocolate that makes a celebration feel extra-festive! Hot chocolate, peppermint bark (a personal fav!), chocolate candy cane cocktails, elegant chocolate fountains, peppermint ice cream cakes with chocolate cookie crust… the list goes on!

An entire Chocolate & Peppermint-inspired theme is actually a great way to add a fun twist to any holiday party.  Whether you’re hosting an ornament exchange, a traditional family dinner, or a holiday cocktail party, this sweet duo is always a crowd pleaser – and very holiday-appropriate! There are so many great ways to get creative with this theme – from the party décor to the food! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

***

SWEETS & TREATS:

1. Dove Peppermint Bark Promises
These yummy, silky-smooth chocolates have a subtle peppermint crunch, and they’re only available during the holidays, so they make for an extra-special treat for guests that they can’t get just anytime of the year!

The packaging is also really fun – it has a contemporary look on the outside featuring a modern red & green circles motif, and the inside of each wrapper holds a holiday-inspired message! These are perfect for setting out in bowls during the party, and they also make a great take-home favor idea for a Peppermint & Chocolate party theme. Package them in small red favor boxes wrapped up gift-style with a white bow and a mini candy cane on top!

For an alternate serving idea, Dove Peppermint Bark Promises look great unwrapped and lined up in modern rows on pretty trays lined with decorative red & white striped paper. The square shapes and classic two-tone peppermint bark look of each chocolate makes for a very stylish & chic addition to the dessert buffet.

2. Peppermint & Hot Fudge Ice Cream Cake
This is a holiday favorite that we make every year! It features a buttery chocolate cookie crust & peppermint ice cream topped with gooey hot fudge, whipped cream, and peppermint candy sprinkles. Amazing! Click here for the full recipe.

3. Chocolate Dipped Candy Canes Sticks
This is an easy DIY treat that works well with all kinds of chocolate: milk, dark, white, and peppermint. Just melt the chocolate in a small bowl or coffee mug and dip old-fashioned peppermint candy cane sticks in the chocolate, covering about half of the stick. While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle it with crushed candy cans, chocolate sprinkles, or white nonpareils and let dry.

***

SIGNATURE COCKTAILS:

Warm up or cool off with these fun signature Cocktail Ideas that coordinate perfect with this theme: Peppermint Patty “Hot Toddies” and Frosty Candy Cane Martinis.

Peppermint Patty Hot Toddy
Ingredients
:
1 oz. peppermint schnapps
½ oz. créme de cacao
1 tsp. créme de menthe
5 to 8 oz. hot chocolate
whipped cream
shaved chocolate

Directions:
Pour liqueurs into a glass mug, fill with hot chocolate and top with a generous helping of whipped cream. Garnish with chocolate shavings.

***

Chocolate Covered Candy Cane Martini
Ingredients
:
2 oz. vodka
1 oz. chocolate liqueur
1 oz. peppermint schnapps
1 oz. cream

Directions:
Add ingredients to an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake well. Serve in a chilled martini glass rimmed with crushed candy canes, and hang a mini candy cane on the rim to garnish.

***

DECORATIONS:

Wrap red ribbon diagonally around white cylinder vases to give them a peppermint candy-cane look. Fill the vases with tight bunches of red and white flowers.

Wrap white pillar candles with a ring of candy cane sticks, using hot glue to attach the candy sticks all the way around the candle. For the finishing touch, embellish with a band of red satin ribbon. (This concept also works great for round chocolate cakes, substituting frosting as the “adhesive” of course!)

To add a sweet twist to place settings, embellish chocolate-brown napkins with red & white satin ribbon and a candy cane “topper”.

Make a chocolate candy-cane garland by gluing a long row of candy canes to a 1.5” band of chocolate-brown satin ribbon. Glue the top “hook” portion of the candy canes to the ribbon, and face each set of 2 candy canes inward towards each other so that their form heart shapes all the way down the banner.

Exploring & Celebrating Holiday Traditions

The holiday season always brings about a lot of talk of “traditions, and with how hectic our standard day to day life can be, I love that this time of year always serves as a fun reminder for us to stop and spend time with family and friends!

Traditions also give you & your family something to look forward to every year, and there’s a certain comfort in that reliability. It’s also important to remember that traditions that they can be unique to you. Do the things that make you and and your own loved ones happy – even if it’s as simple as enjoying a certain treat while watching a favorite holiday movie or making a special drink to sip while decorating the tree. Here are 2 of the traditions that I’ve come to know & love in my own family circle… both of which happen to center around food, of course! =)

1. MEALS THAT CELEBRATE FAMILY HERITAGE.
This is definitely one of the traditions that I REALLY look forward to ever year – in fact, just thinking about it right now is making me hungry! My husband’s father is Italian, so we always have a big traditional Italian Seafood dinner on Christmas Eve with his extended family, and as a seafood-lover, this is the best meal ever! They serve all different kinds of fish and shellfish (including pesto-marinated crab!), as well as yummy pasta dishes like lasagna and fettuccini alfredo. (more…)

Modern Thanksgiving Table: Orange & Gray

Modern Thanksgiving Table Ideas

When Alexandra from Enchanted Events & Design recently stumbled on some cool orange/gray/white patterns, she was inspired to design her Thanksgiving table around them this year. So… instead of pairing oranges & yellows with earthy browns like you typically see on Thanksgiving, she used gray & silver to give the table a fresh, modern vibe. It’s amazing how something as simple as swapping out a single color can give a traditional holiday celebration a fresh, updated feel!

Fall Pumpkin Celebration + DIY Inspiration

Thanksgiving Fall Party Dessert Bar Ideas

Thanksgiving Fall Party Dessert Bar Ideas

This fabulous Pumpkin Celebration by Katie of Katie Grace Designs was also created for The City Cradle’s fall celebration challenge… how fun & CREATIVE is this?!! Katie did such a great job and there is SO much great DIY inspiration to be found here. Added bonus: she’s posted step by step tutorials for the yummy Pumpkin Trifle, the Fabric Backdrops for the tables, and those ridiculously cool Pinecone Chandeliers on her blog!

A few more details I’m loving here: dessert “stands” made from hay bales (which I just saw on sale at Michael’s!), a “Falling Tea Leaf” bar (full details below), pinecone cupcake toppers, adorable mini pumpkin pies, pumpkin trifles served in decorated mason jars, and a clever fall banner utilizing burlap backing for the letters.

MORE PARTY DETAILS FROM KATIE:

Cupcake Toppers:
“The cupcake toppers were made by taking small pinecones and spray painting them orange and gluing them onto different grapevine sticks. I really was going for a rustic cupcake topper and I think these definitely achieved that look.

“Falling Tea Leaf” Bar:
This was my favorite part of the party! What better way to celebrate fall than to sit outside and drink hot tea?!

The “tree” was made from natural colored Manzanita branches… I bought several different flavors of tea, then took the individual tea bags and wrapped them with orange burlap. Each of the tea bag were labeled with their flavor then hung throughout the tree. I set out two carafes with hot water + spices and milk for people to spice up their tea. I made orange burlap sleeves for the styrofoam cups to add some detail. The chalkboard was stuck in the hay bale to instruct the guests of what to do. I had friends over for this and I have to say both the guys and girls LOVED it! I actually overheard three guys debating on which flavored tea was better.

Table Centerpiece:
Fresh orange daisies arranged with hay, pinecones, moss placed in a fun container found at a flea market.

Pumpkin Food Labels:
The pumpkins that I used for food labels I purchased from T.J.Maxx and were in the Seasonal Section. I cut a slit in the pumpkin stem to make them label holders.

Mini Pumpkin Pies:
The recipe for these miniature pumpkin pies came from the amazing Bakerella. I cut out two pumpkin shape crusts and molded them together to make the crust shape. I LOVED the way these cuties turned out!

Cinnamon Popcorn Balls:
Isn’t everything cuter on a stick?! I made up this recipe and for the most part and they turned out really yummy and looked really cute until I looked over and they were falling apart. I have to fiddle with this recipe before I share it. But at least we captured a photo!”

SHOPPING RESOURCES:
– Hay bales, pumpkins on dessert table, mason jars – Hobby Lobby
– Michael Miller orange flower fabric behind tea table – HbFabrics on Etsy
– Brown tablecloths (which are actually bed coverlets) – Urban Outfitters
– Mini pumpkins that I used for food label holders – T.J. Maxx

Happy Cake Stand + Circus Party Inspiration

DIY circus cake stand

This cake stand makes me happy just looking at it – how about you?! It’s from a wonderfully creative & unique wedding that was featured in the Summer 2010 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings, and it’s on my mind right now for 2 reasons:

1. I think this would be a fantastic display in holiday colors for a big Christmas party/celebration or with gold/silver shingles for a dramatic New Year’s Eve dessert table…

2. because my daughter turns 8 months today, so I’m starting to get excited about planning her first birthday party – and the theme is going to be “Macy’s Birthday Parade” – as a play on the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! I’ve always been a sucker for circus/carnival type themes, so a birthday parade fits right in there… and we just couldn’t resist the play on words! (more…)

DIY Tutorial: Mod “Table Tree” Centerpiece

modern thanksgiving centerpiece

Here are the DIY details for the “Table Tree” centerpiece from the Grateful Mod Tablescape. This tree was inspired by one of the illustrations from the Grateful Mod Printables, and I’m pretty excited about how it turned out! I had originally planned to paint styrofoam balls to use for the tree tops, but with all the Christmas decor that’s out right now, using ball ornaments sounded way easier (and it was)!

Although there are multiple steps to this arrangement, there’s really only one step that’s anything other than “easy” – and that’s working with the wooden dowels. You’ll need to cut the dowels down to size and drill holes into the large dowel. It REALLY helps to enlist a partner to hold the dowel steady while you cut & drill (or vice versa). I know the idea of drilling at all can be a little daunting, but it honestly only took about 10 minutes – so once you get past that step you’re golden! Full DIY details below… (more…)

Grateful Mod Centerpiece #2: Table “Forest”

This cute little “table forest” arrangement was so much fun to make – and super easy! It coordinates with the Grateful Mod Tablescape and you could use it as an alternate centerpiece option to the (more involved) design featured on the table, or as accent decor elsewhere at your fall party or Thanksgiving dinner.

Once again, these utilize the free Grateful Mod printables, which were created in honor of Operation Give Thanks, in support of our troops. (more…)
